Alright VSC guys, what's happening out there?
« on: March 15, 2012, 06:07:18 PM »
Well? Come on. It's after 5pm now so I know darn good and well flying is over for the day. How about a little news for those of us that spent all their money on building new shops and couldn't go this year?

Well, we can tell you ONE thing for sure:  the Spark Ignition guys have finally figured it out!  The days of sputtering, stuttering, and failed flights are over.  Awesome event!  Wait 'til you see the scores...

Thank Power MOSFETs.. (we Electrical Engineers get no respect {I could tell my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and a radio} )

I sense that working ignition doesn't take anything away from their charm..

Wish I could be there to witness it all. I've ordered up some good weather for the Tucson area, hope I didn't accidentally anger the Wind Gods..  Ooops.

You cats have fun, be safe, don't forget the sunscreen. VSC! Wheee!

Thank Power MOSFETs

The lowly SCR is more important to a CDI system than a MOSFET -- you could charge the ignition cap using bipolar transistors just as easily as with MOSFETs, but getting the nice fast thump to the coil happens a lot easier with an SCR.
AMA 64232

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have tried to design with power MOSFETs   The two most important parameters are (1) voltage rating (2) ON-state resistance.  Both are available in a MOSFET, but not both in one package!  Breakdown voltage must be over 250V, and ON-state resistance must be a few milliOhms.  They are used in electric motor controllers, but voltage ratings for motor use are not as critical.

I've used the lowly power transistor for a long time with excellent results in spark ignition service.  I no longer build coil drivers for retail, but I do make them for Larry Davidson in Virginia, who handles retail sales.

Boy Uncle Mikey is right about ignition.  This was my second time at competing in ignition and thanks to Jim Kraft I did much better than the first time.  I posted a 241 for my first flight and a 276 (I think) for my second flight.  Stan Tyler posted a 284 and a 301 with my Humongous, he was only 10 points out from getting something to take home.  Also his two flight were the first two complete flights he put on the plane. Stan had to spot the other flyer's 5 points because he didn't build the plane.

It was great fun and it felt good to meet my goals of having a competitive plane that flew the complete Old Time pattern and I scored decent numbers.  Hats off to all the guys who flew ignition, there is nothing like getting a Super Cyke, or Anderson Spitfire, or any other ignition engine to roar to life and keep it running for the entire pattern.  Finally a big thanks to Don Hutchinson for his ignition module, it's a big part of why we are now getting good flights time after time in ignition. ;D

I, of course, left my camera sitting on the kitchen table. But others are snapping away. I think Gene Martine has a picture of every and their plane. Someone will post pictures.

Thank you so much Gene. Congrats to all who flew, and a special to all the winners. Even the spectators are winners at VSC. I sure missed being there this year, but hopefully I will be next year.

Looks like the weather for today will be only good for the stout of heart flyers. Don't wreck you planes guys.

Thanks again Gene. You all have a great time at the banquet, and drive safe going home.

I flew number ten on my circle today,Roy flew right before me and the wind was starting to pick up and swirl,, It was pretty unstable by the time I flew,, it was pretty unsettled above about 30 degrees. On the good side, I got to see how pretty the top and bottom of my wing is while its flying,, ( not really what I wanted though,, LOL) I started to lean overhead in the eights so I managed to make the first loop of the clover ( to get my ten points) and it quit,, out of fuel.... ... .. .   put me in a bad place to the wind, I flew it down to the ground a bit abrupt and it bounce,, lets just say ten feet high with no airspeed in the wind is a BAD BAD place to be,, ( I could hear the onlookers making gasping noises LOL) I managed to float it back down and got it on the ground in one piece, so I was relieved greatly,,, from ten foot altitude to landed the plane only moved about 5 or 10 feet forward,, all I can say is,, #1 WHEW<<< :o  and #2, NEVER underestimate the importance of absolutly drag free controls,, thats the only thing that let me save it....
what an adventure,, What an event,,

My luck continued pretty much as it had all week. But at least I'm taking home a plane in one piece. Ya know, buzzing the prop on takeoff is just a bad thing to do.

Now if you guys want great pictures, contact Gene Martine.   He just posted the scores earlier.   Also Stunt News should have some great pictures also.   I now Rickki Pyatt was taking picture during the week and at the banquet.  My camera is still in the bedroom where I was not supposed to forget it.  Happy with the flights on the ISW, but the power system went south on the Thunderbolt, reason for two scratches in Classic for me.   Great people and weather.
