PT-19 by Hemstrought

I have a copy of Dave Hemstrought's PT-19 plans.  I would like to build the model and was wondering if anyone know's of a laser cut rib package for this model.  I believe the wing span is 55".  Really a nice Army aircraft.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Larry

 Check with Walter Umland, he offered a kit of it and may be able to supply a rib set.

You will love the model.  I still miss seeing Dave fly his at local meets.  He's doing a lot of R/C with his son now, he told me.  His used K&B .40s set up by Stan Powell like the ones Stan built for Les Mc.  The last version I remember had been changed to an Aero Tiger .36.

Model is coming along just fine.  Fuselage is framed and the engine mounts are in.  I'll be using a LA-46.  At this time I'm carving out the cowling.  I don't have a tank yet, and am trying to figure out the size (4 or more Oz.)

              My son Shawn has been flying his for 5 years now. This plane flies very well. We have a Brodak .40 for power. I have a 4 oz. tank in it and it will make the pattern in the hotter months. It barely makes it when the temps get cool. This plane presents well in the air. It certainly was a great plane to build and it has several awards behind it. I'd like to thank Paul Taylor for taking the picture a few years ago. Ken

I fly a 52 oz plane powered by an LA 46 and it takes close to 5 oz of fuel for the pattern.

Hi Larry, Nice to hear that you'll be using the LA 46 my overall most favorite engine! I fly mine on 11 X % Pro Zinger or regular Zingers of the same dimension. These engines on a rare day will do a peattern on 4 oz. of fuel most really to be comfortable use at least a 4.5 oz tank. I prefer muffler pressure others don not! I know you will be most happy!

HI Larry,

I would look at going down a little bit in size from the "stock" venturi.  Something like the OS .20-.25FP or .25LA.  Jim Lee makes slightly smaller venturis which will give the needed fuel mileage (as low as 3 1/2oz.) and not kill the power enough to notice in that size model.  Pat Johnston has led the charge in using the .20-.25 size venturi in models this size.

Here is one built from American modeler plans.
In keeping with the spirit of the classic event, it has a Johnson .32 Stunt, old Veco wheels and an old Top Flight prop.
The coolest thing about this design, is that with an open cockpit you can be pretty creative with the detailing.
This model took on a severe wing warp and I have given up hope for it to be a "World Beater" so I'm building a new one, only better.

Not well.
It can be configured to take out a little more of the bark, but the old Johnson dosn't take kindly to mufflers.

I had to ask as that was something that was running through my head last night as I was trying to get to sleep.  In the time of "You can't fly here without a muffler"  That is a solution.
