All work has been halted because........
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:23:59 PM »
....because there's a wasp in my shop! Now, I can't find it to swat it but I saw it fly by me, so I know he's there somewhere. I can't ignore it 'cause I'm scared of the darned things. I can't just leave the door open and hope he flys out and I don't have time to patrol the doorway and watch for him. I guess I'll just go back in a week or so and hope he died! HB~>

Clint, fire up a smoky engine in the shop, and smoke him out. That should do it. And then the shop will smell like Castor oil and dope and epoxy. There is no down side. Good luck  <=

Clint,

Stock up on Wasp Wacker.  Al Gore will ban it.  Probably Diesel fuel too.

I have them fly in every once in awhile. I usually just turn off the lights and leave the door open. They will almost always fly to the light. I just stand back and watch them fly out. Probably wouldn't work at 3am unless there's a light outside the shop you could turn on.

Wasps are rarely agressive unless you touch them or threaten thir nest...not like yellow jackets or other hornets.

My advice - use my Dad's technique. Just reach over and pick them up
and roll them between your finger and thumb. Done quickly, it's beautiful
and elegant.

Of course, my Dad could kill a Ferguson tractor by putting his index and pinky
fingers of both hands on the four plugs, shorted it out.

He had fat strong fingers that looked like sausages and felt like they were made
out of stone.

We had a yellowjacket nest next to the front walk, not a good site. In the garage, I found a spray can of starting fluid, and another of wasp and hornet killer. Starting fluid first, followed by the poison, then a dirt clod jammed into the hole. Worked wonderfully, and yes, I resisted the urge to throw a match on the entrance.... VD~ Steve

LOL Beats trying to swat one with a flyswatter like I did once. Broke a Barstormer wing in half.  LL~

I know what you mean. I was trying to avoid doing the same thing in my shop.
I have to deal with wasps all the time as they like to make BIG nests in rooftop HVAC systems. Many a time I've been sent running across a roof because I've disturbed a nest by opening a panel. Most of the time I see one or two flying around to tip me off that there's a nest inside. But in the summer, I'm wary of every A/C system I open. WaspWhacker is standard equipment on my truck.

But I'm still scared to death of the stupid things! :-[
