I made one using a dimmer a long time ago without the step down transformer. It worked .. but.......was not safe and could easily over voltage a wire at turn on resulting in a dangerous situation. I replaced that with an auto transformer. But that has all of the issues of the dimmer.

I did not know step down transformers were that cheap. Next use I will put one in the circuit.

very nice, I've been wanting to start cutting some foam, looks like I'll have to build this.

I still use a old Sears battery charger. I have also use a old laptop brick power supply. Worked well.
