All American Eagle progress report

I was over at Gordy's for Christmas, and we took these pictures of the two AAE's we're building. Gordy wanted me to post these so you-all can see that he's still ahead of me,,, LL~

His is in the "silver" and is looking pretty good. Projected all up weight is currently ~44 oz's finished. His will be finished in the Air Force "ThunderBirds" scheme.

Mine is the "bare bones", one. Projected finish weight is about the same. Mine will be finished in the Navy "Blue Angels" scheme, after all, I am a Navy vet.

Those two models look fabulous!  I am in envy.  :o y1 ;D

I hope they fly even better than they will look.

What are the respective powerplants going to be??

Thanks Bill, I apologise, I was going to post what the power would be for each of them.

Gordy has a PA .40 lite. I believe this is the "Merlin" engine. Rear exhaust, with the muffler.

Mine has a Stalker .40RE, one of my favorite engines for this size design.

Nice looking ship!  I just love the agressive look the anhedral gives a model.

Can you show us how you setup the linkage of the anhedral elevator?

The anhedral simulates a straight stab at a lower poisition. Did you guys raise the root position in reference to the thrust line to compensate for the anhedral effect?

I will soon be building a model with anhedral stab, Miss Kell, and I am wondering if a model like this will trun insidde loops as good as outside ones.

Sorry for the delay in posting this response. I have had a problem with some nasty little virus that slammed be into bed for a day.

Yes, we are both planning on have these planes at VSC. I think they'll look good parked side by side, one in Air Force, and the other in Navy aerobatic dress.

Martin, in answer to your question, We just built the plane to the plans by Dave Gierke, A former Nat's champ. He probably did the figures, as the plane is supposed to be quite capable. Versions of the "Novi" series have always done well in competitions.

I agree about the aggressive looks with the anhydral. It wasn't all that hard to do either. The plans show the use of two elevator horns and split pushrods. We used "lucky" box's and one elevator pushrod. In fact, I laid out the amount of lateral movement on the computer, and found that only a total of 3/16" was required, so I used K&S brass square tubing with a 3/32" dia. horn wire. I used a sharpend section of the sq. tubing as a punch and, after pre-drilling two 1/8" dia. holes, side by side, I punched the tubing into place. I also used the dreemel to shave a small flat on both sides of the elevator wire so that there would be minimal drag in use. The system works perfectly, with no more drag, mabey less even, than I normally get. I also used the same "lucky" box construction on the flaps, figuring that any possible misalignments could spell more drag at those junctures.

Gordy says he's going to cut 1/2 an inch off the prop. I think it is an 11 inch one right now.

We thinks so too. I believe Gordy will have the edge on power, but either should provide more than enough for the design.

No, we decided that the extra weight wasn't worth it. We also decided agianst the fuelling at the wing root option as well. It seems that the reason the original wasn't flown after a while. The tubing came loose, and it would have taken "surgery" to reconnect. At least that's what the myth says.

Here is a photo off the magazine cover....NO PROBLEMO! After flying a couple of anhedral models...(a friends Novi 3 flew with wonderful precision. I hear also that Big Art's son's beautiful V tailed model flew well enough to place in the top three in many many competititons. Check details on plan for horn set up.

Very cool, John. Mine will also have a PA40 "Merlin" with my own muffler. At least I don't have to clear at nose wheel!

Eric Rule also told me to use the lucky box, but when I got it my hands I was skeptical as how well it would work. I am happy you are using it successfully, so  I will do the same :)

I have added the AAE on my list of planes to built, it is truly an awesome design.

thank you Bill, I have the original plans and the magazine. This was the model I have allways wanted to have when I was a teen. Just about a year ago  my brother found the magazine and show me the Miss Kell Plan. I immediately got the CLPA bug again, and now I am infected big time. I have all the material to start building it for some time and I hope to start building it soon.

Well, I just heard from Dave Gierke and he notes that the AAE is in no way the Novi II. The Novi II was a separate plane that met it's demise just before the 65 Nats and was never published. It is, apparently, quite different from the All American Eagle.

John,

Nope, no plans. It crashed with only 6 flights on it and the plans have gone the way of such things. The only surviving picture was after the crash. Sigh... Dave said he hoped to recreate it someday. He does have some of the orginal templates and some sketches. Said he'd let me know if plans became available. I'd love to build one too.
