There have been some fairly intense, sometimes heated discussions on here, which is all fine and good. For the most part discussion remains polite and civil. But there are times when it just turns stupid.
I’m not going to name names, but it seems like the perpetrators of stupidity and discontent tend to use an alias rather than their real name. I honestly cannot think of an instance where verbal excrement was being spread by someone using his real name, but two or three people using aliases instantly come to mind.
I know Sparky requires registration here with your real name, and then allows you to change your user name at will.
Given the pattern of trolling exhibited at times by some who use an alias, I would suggest that REQUIRING the use of a real name as your user name might go far to eliminate the BS that can develop here.
Hiding behind anonymity can make people brave. Eliminating that anonymity might reduce the number of keyboard commandos we have to put up with.

While i agree that what you wrote isn't false, it's not 100% true either.
I sign my emails as a DoD contractor as "Target". It has been my handle and nick name since 1983. So, it's just that I'm more comfortable signing off as that. There's no hiding going on.
Look me up on RCG, and the story of the nick name is on my blog there.
I'll be the exception to Jims observation, i hope!

I have used my real name for many years Ed Ruane. I now sign as Ed or EddieR.also aka” Eddie Haskell”
I belong to two huge forums for bicycles and audio. Almost no one on them use there real name.
I do see a lot of anger ,hostility in some members on this site. I am embarreaed by some of the things I see on here by people I know. The bitter debates on here is a turn off for many. I dought using real names will help.

Not that it matters, but FWIW the "wwwarbird" name that I use here is simply a nickname I came up with back when I originally registered. Being a passionate WWII Warbird fan it simply uses my actual initials in front of the Warbird term which is a nickname for WWII aircraft.

I kept with tradition on here, but my real name and MAAA number (Model Aeronautical Association of Australia) there if you look.

I have had the nickname Reptoid in the modeling world for over 40 years and probably many if not most on this forum know who I am. If not, I sign my posts with "Regards Don" and my AMA # 3882. If that doesn't make you happy you can click on the name Reptoid on any of my posts or look in the members list and it shows my full name Don Repp and my city and state.
On more than one occasion I have seen members who do use their real name make snide remarks about someones posts including, but not limited to, mine and implying fear, hiding, or hate because someone uses a nickname. Apparently they couldn't figure out how to read my signature or click on the nickname.

LOL Long for sure, illustrious kinda, made a lot more illustrious when Jimmy Jack and Steve Hills ( designer of the Arrowplane) (Both SO-Cal combat pilots of note) collaborated to name Jimmy Jacks pro tour monster truck Reptoid and Steve designed the artwork/parts to make it look like a long toothed Reptoid

I myself use my name here. Altho I go by Jamie since my dad and I share the name. Most folks ive met here still call me James.

But if I had to use an Alias. It would be Big Mamou. Its where Im from. Im a big guy. And the name just stuck no matter where I moved or worked.

I, myself, have to live with the shame of being from Up North. Iatt Swamp area of Grant Parish.

Posted a note in the Speed section a few days back re the loss of Boyd Shelton from BR. Flew with Burley Harris. Had the pleasure of visiting them several years ago.

Charles uses a "handle", but he is not secretive about his real name, or address.

Nothing wrong with using an alias, as long as the real name is not cleverly hidden.

I am sometimes known as "Dr Spark", a moniker I picked up in connection with my professional work researching High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse radiation. But I am not ashamed to let folks know who I am.

have seen the internet culture change from grass roots
to big business.
Back in the day it was part of that culture to have a
"handle" in the same way that CB radio people did.
My boat is documented as Goozgog and that was what
people called me over VHF and SSB radio nets, so when
I had to name my AOL account, "Goozgog" was the obvious
choice.
After almost twenty years, it seems old fashioned to be
known by a handle and it might be time to change.

I do not post but do read a lot(English is easy, American English is hard). When I read a post, I imagine having a conversation with the author. Without names(or photos), it is difficult.
If you have been using a nickname for many years, you're assuming that everyone knows who you are. There are many who have not had the honor to meet you in person.

We have a club outside Baton Rouge. If ever nearby on a Saturday morning we are likely there. More than welcome to come fly with us
Not everyone in our club flies stunt. Few sport flyers. Our contest is 3rd weekend of October and El Dorado contest is 1st weekend of Nov. Great time n contest at both venues!

This Cajun Boy is 83 years on this Earth. Only flew Speed in competition. Currently 60 years worth.

Wish I could visit. Was in BR 4 years ago.

I'm one of the people that uses a nickname, RknRusty, but my real name is in bold type below in my signature.

I liked it better when everyone's location was listed with their avatar. I miss that since the forum was updated and eliminated it some time ago.

Btw, Sparky says he thought... maybe he was joking... that "RknRusty" meant "Wreckin" Rusty. Nnoooo, it means Rockin' Rusty. I'm an old Rocker from way back.

Well, I'd vote for no aliases, OR have your real name in your signature OR in your profile. One out of three options. I'd also like to see locations...just city/state/country would be fine. You might have a new flying buddy two blocks down, but you'll never know if you aren't willing.

I have had my nickname long before I ever heard of internet forums. My name appears in my signature. As far as I know, I have had no problems with anyone here. I like my nickname and use it all over the internet and plan to continue to do so.

"Andre"... I derived that from my middle name, which is "Andre".

"Ming"... a play on words with my last name, which is spelled "Ming".

I hardly think that the use of a real name or screen name decides the content of ones posts. It's the person at the keyboard.
We all know who the people are that the original poster is referring to. I think that it is coincidental that they use a screen name.
