Airplane Storage
« on: December 06, 2015, 06:40:27 PM »
I know there have been threads on storage before but I thought i would share what I made today. Simple and cheap. 2x4's with holes at 2" spacing. 1/2" EMT electrical conduit for the bars. Adjustable for different size planes. These are for my combat stuff, I will make more for stunt planes. All in so far at $23. The EMT is $2.30 for a 10ft section. The pics represent ten 10ft sections cut to length.

Mike,

Clever set-up, gotta give you credit, you are organized.  H^^

I use a wire and a nail. Nail in the wall and the wire goes to the gear.

It is wonderful to be able to do that when you have all of that head room. Otherwise someone has to look at it and say that's nice.

We custom built this home 18 months ago and I had the builder raise the ceilings in my workshop from 9ft to 11ft specifically for this purpose. I had envisioned it a while ago but just got around to doing it. I'm glad I did because I am super happy with the result. I have room to put up 3 more racks on the other two walls for stunt ships. I guess I better get building to fill 'em all up. #^ #^

Mike I have needed to do something similar for a while now and will probably copy your method

One thing I see in the last photo is the likely event of me dragging the wing skin on the sharp EMT edge so I think I will dip each end in the liquid rubber  used for adding covering to pliers and such

I deburred the i.d. with a 3/4" chamfer bit on a drill motor then smoothed the o.d. on my bench grinder. Didn't take long at all. Besides my combat planes are a little beat up anyway. When I build some for the larger stunt ships I will put some foam pipe insulation on them. I am thrilled with how this worked out, it freed up a ton of space. ;D ;D

I just remembered why I procrastinate so much on this project (I have all the materiel on site form all my other home repair projects)

For some reason no house framer or shed builder (in my area) can find it in their craft to place wall studs on 16 inch centers and each one must be found with a stud finder and marked...a royal pain

Just go out there and tackle it, you won't be sorry you did it. I just returned from the Depot with more material for stunt ships.

I made a similar holder several years ago to hold stunt models. Because they have longer wingspans than the smaller combat ships, I staggered the holders in the vertical plane to allow the wings to overlap and thus save some space.

Later - Bob Hunt
I like it Bob. I was just looking at my other wall to figure out how I was going to do one for stunt ships. Great idea to stagger them. I'm gonna use it. Thanks!
