Title: Airplane recommendation?
Post by: Ken Deboy on October 15, 2006, 01:51:11 PM
Can someone recommend an relatively quick building airplane (NOT ARF) that would fly good with a Super Tigre G 51? I destroyed my Skyray today (if it hadn't been MY airplane, it would have been a really funny crash:) ) and I need to get something in the air again soon.

thanks,
Ken

The Legacy is a bargain for the asking price, no argument. Alternatives are out there, however.

The Mo'Best is a very good profile (PAMPA Plans) for the G.51 or .46LA, tho there have been some updates since publishing. I'd consider hounding Larry Cunninham for a set of laser cut ribs and details of the changes.

You might also ask Phil Cartier about using the G.51 on his Giles profile. I read about somebody flying a G.51 on a Profile Cardinal, tho I'd be more inclined toward the Pathfinder (due to the 620 sq. inches of wing).

RSM's Shark 45, Hawker Hunter and Shoestring are very suitable for the G.51.

UHP's Saturn, Impact, Bear, and Buccaneer 746 would be very good with the G.51. The 746 would be easiest (another Allen Brickhaus design). Locally, Chris Cox flies the Saturn, plenty of Impacts, but no Bears. As a step up from a Skyray, the (profile)Imitation looks like an obvious choice from UHP's lineup.

And then...Pat Johnston does many of the CAD drawings for Brodak, RSM, WU and others. You might consider asking Pat for the CAD file for one of his designs (the P-51X, for instance), and have a kit laser cut by RSM or Tank's Hanger.

You could also get a wing kit from most of these, a set of plans, and build a profile version. Most these would be a huge jump from a Skyray, after all. This is an amazing time for CL Stunt. Let's just hope it lasts another century or two... n~ Steve

PS: I forgot about the SIG Magnum. A good flier with a G.51, if weight is kept reasonable. Tom Dixon might make you a kit for a Magnum Plus, which is an excellent design. Many folks like the Randy Smith SV-11 with a G.51, but any of his designs from 650 to 700 sq. inches would be great, and laser kits are available.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you have contact info for Larry Cunninham? I've been reading the MoBest construction article and I really like the plane. If I can get a set of ribs for it, that's what I'll build. I have the RSM Shark kit, but I'm looking for something a little simpler for now.

cheers,
Ken

Since the MO BEST is going to be a Brodak ARF and the rib set is listed in there catalog (not available yet) Larry might not be the one to contact.
