Gee Bee R3 Stunter
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:28:59 AM »
I got these pix a while back and thought you might like to see something new. It was built by a gentleman in Virginia. I am still trying to get him to share the prints. This is one pretty ship. y1

Did he build it from scratch or base it on the R/C ARF?

Whichever, it does look good. Different but good.
I built a Blue Pants as a kid. Wish I still had it. Might even learn to fly it.

Thanks for posting Bill,

He "scratch builds" them, if it is the same guy I know (and I am pretty sure it is! LOL!!).  When I first me him, 10-15 years ago, he built his planes on board ship while deployed on cruise.  Not sure if he is still on active duty, though.  All his work is awesome.  I thought he was actually kidding when he said he was at sea while building them, but he was!

Yep, now I am sure it is scratch built too:

I found some pictures of the Hobby Lobby/Donuts Models ARF, on rcgroups, and there's so many differences, starting from aileron/flap size.

... in case someone doesn't know, the R3 is a "fantasy scale" design originally drawn by Mirco Pecorari of Italy.

Interesting Gee Bee.  Of course, not a "real" GB.  Now, this is a "real" Gee Bee!

 Billy Boy;

The youngster holding the R3 in the last two pictures is the builder.

Thanks, G-Man.  I met him "around" 1995 or maybe a year or two earlier..., or later....... been a while! LOL!! can't remember now.  He came to the Norfolk contests when he was able.  I just have forgotten his name! LL~ LL~    Pretty sure he is "Mike". ???  When I first met him he had an awesome looking "Racer" stunter that he said he built while aboard ship.  I guess he is out of active duty now. ???  His models have always been top drawer.  A real craftsman and all of his models I have seen were iron on covering, but it sure didn't "look" like it! ;D

I miss the Norfolk meets, a lot!  ( along with Willis and Mike...............  :'( )

Wow. What a beautiful model. Doesn't it make you want to build one?

Compliments to the modeler.

That is one good looking airplane.

Have been looking for a profile shape for a profile stunt, this could be it!

As of the last time I spoke to Mike on the net, there still are no plans for his. The airfoil is "Strega". All he has are sketches of what he was after. This is his original.

must be one similar then - as mentioned  - come to think of it - this one has a constant chord wing and is for a 46 - so only "close"

I think fuselage side view is close enough. A more elliptical wing would look nicer, and be more work to build...

Fuselage is correct. Just change the wing and open the gear legs and it's there.
