Flying season is offically over for me for the summer. Now I need to find a cheap way to air condition my garage/workshop so I can do some work over the summer.

How big is you work space and how close is it to the house..

If attached or close enough to the house, run a duct from the house central air into the shop.. Even without a return it will keep it reasonably comfortable.. The heat/Air guys will say this is a no-no without a return but it does work, I've done it twice. Once to an attached single car garage and once to a 20 X 16 out building.

My present 30 X 40 shop has a large window A/C unit through a wall that does a reasonable job. Don't know how big it is as it was in when we bought the place, costs a little to run but it's worth it when it's 102 outside.

Window unit.  Most places like Lowe's or Home Depot will have information for size needed based on square foot area to be cooled.  My dad ran across a used one at an apartment complex that cools and heats.  Many currently available window A/C units are very energy efficient.  A friend of mine suspecting that his older central unit was an energy hog put two window units and a portable unit in his house and cut his cooling costs in half.

One of our club members who retired & moved to Florida built a small (maybe 10 x 12 or so) model workshop in in his back yard.  He made it very airtight and well insulated and air conditioned.  It worked well for him.

Without the airtight & insultated, the electric bill will be "high".  An airtight garage is an uphill battle.

Hi,
I have a Fredrich wall mount heat/ac unit in my shop--it could be mounted in a window.  Uses 220 vac.
I think it is 14K BTU---actually too big for my 20x30 space, but one day I will expand???

All I know is, after being raised by an old and very good HVAC/Plumbing man (honorary Eng. Deg.), and knowing how I hate the heat, put in the biggest unit you can afford!  It will cool the place quicker, and if well insulated, will not need to run as much.  I know I don't want to wait 30-45 min. for the place to get cool.

Just a thought.....................!
