Title: After the first round of Classic in Tucson
Post by: John Miller on March 18, 2010, 04:03:48 PM
I just got a call from Gordy. He's really jacked up because Bart is in first place, at this point, flying Gordy's version of Mark Fechnors Classic Twin, "Too Much".

This is the first competitive Stunter Bart has built in years, so he has appearance points with this one, something he didn't havewhen flying OP planes.

As I recall, he's followed by Ted Fancher, Mcdonald, and Hunt, though I'm not sure if that's the right order. Lot's can happen in the next two days, butcongrats to Bart for todays effort.

Oh, BTW, Barts Too Much, like the original, has operating retracts. Really something to see in the air. H^^

I watched most of Bart's first official. Very cool looking plane in the air. And man, that guy can fly. Bob McDonald also looked really good. I didn't see Bob's or Ted's flights.

If there ever was a "natural stick", it's gotta be Bart!

I need to mention that I may have gotten Bob Mcdonald confused with Bob Whitely. Not sure how I did that, but apologise for it. HB~>

I think Whitely is flying a Formula S.  Got his autograph on the "Miss Kell" plans.  He even showed me pictures of how that sweet young girl looks today.  What a knockout especially with the new baby.   H^^

Bobby Mac had a killer flight today. Highest of the day, I think. Bart fought engine problems. Ted looked pretty good.

And hey Shultzie, Bob Gialdini says he's not designing another plane for you.

TELL GIALDINI THAT IT'S ALL HIS FAULT THAT I BECAME SOOOOOOO DAMNED HOOKED ON CLPA IN THE FIRST PLACE!

I NEED BOB'S ENCOURAGEMENT AND MENTORSHIP AGAIN....WISH I COULD BE THERE WITH U GUYS...AND TO TALK WITH U N BOB IN PERSON! (See if you can "sweet-talk Bob into coming back home with you by offering him a weekend of my neighbor new sail boat..just a few blocks down the harbor from my crib in the Gig Harbor Woods?)
(those were the days...
LOOK HOW YOUNG BOTH GIALDINI AND I LOOKED BACK IN THOSE DAZE DAYS?

Mr Gialdini hasn't changed much and is still such a gentleman.  Now when are you going to make it to the fun in desert fun fly called Vintage Stunt Championships?  Quite a few fellows here that did not fly.  So a lot of BS is going around.  I guess I am going to have to make it to the NW as I have a sister-in-law in either Idaho or Oregon.  Anyway only thing left is banquet and so longs til next year.   :( :) #^ #^ #^ H^^

>>Mr Gialdini hasn't changed much and is still such a gentleman.<<

But he tells bad jokes.

He talked about how he came to design the Stingray. Interesting guy.

Also should note that Les McDonald made it to VSC. Another very interesting guy. And he tells better jokes.   ;D

Bart was looking very good. Second round had an over run. The next day we went out early and had a great engine run. They were beating together and on the top corner of the hourglass turbelance hit it and the plane crashed. I felt very sad for my friend Bart. The plane flew great. It only had eight flights on it and it was getting better each time we made a change. Bart truly has the gift.

Any chance of seeing a few more photo's of the twin Mr Kaplinski was flying? Looked very cool in the one picture I saw - long engine nacelles - very sleek.
Regards,
Monty

Ahh, memories!  That same FM issue contained plans & construction article for Joe Bilgri's "Caravan" 1/2A Free Flight.  I had just returned home to Illinois from Vietnam...ordered wood & blue tissue from Sig...built that one and flew it that year at Bong AFB, Wisconsin.  It was last seen at great altitude headed in the general direction of Canada.  Little did I realize that F/F would soon give way to a renewed interest in C/L, and that Gordan Delaney, the "Two Much", and...later...Bart Klapinski, would become such important factors in my life.

I posted those pictures before checking in with the photographer, so I better pull them off to keep the home fires burning. :)  dg
