Life and Death
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:00:20 PM »
 Well I made personal history.

Baby Ringmaster with a Golden Bee .049  Cox 5x3 Stock prop.   30ft lines

Carl Goldberg with a Cox Killer Bee .049 ( evil giggles )  6.3 Top Flite prop    30 ft lines

I was able to Maiden my Newly built Pat Ring Baby Ringmaster.... Pull two loops ( first loops in control line EVER) ..... And Pull a Figure 9 on my second flight with the Ringmaster.  While it kills me as I put in my time with this plane.  I am quite happy that I got to fly it. It flew great. Lil touchy on the controls. I mean hey I have not flown on C/L plane in over 10 years and that was a Cox PT-19 LOL.

My dad flew it next and used his old school expertiseto make that plane fly!!! Pulling 3 pretty loops. and landing whit engine running.

I had my Lil Satan with me incase I got ballsy. But I refused to fly it on 30 Ft. Lines But my dad was uip for it as he flew them in the past. About 10 or so seconds into the flight. My monofiliment leadout broke from inside hte wing and after the first loop it continued doing atleast 5-6 loops till it smashed dirt and breaking the Prop ONLY!!!!!! But with the leadout broke in hte wing. I think the plane is simply too pretty to cut open and run new leadouts! Still yet to be determined tho!

I then fueled up my lil RIng and wanted to fly her again.   I get her going. The wind not really as present as for the first flight. The lines were getting tighty and I knew the engine was starting to lean out and run smooth. After a few rounds I decided to go for the gusto and Loop. It went up and STALLED!!!! So instead of running backwards like a madman I try to extend my arm to tighten the lines and drove her to the ground. Oh well. It is repairable.

I will post vids of the flights in a second. Just not in a mood to fight with pics right now lol.

Get a Pat King ( quickshift) Baby RIngmaster. Its a dream!!!!

I mean for my first time flying in YEARS. Im quite proud of myself.

On the last flight I had a old friend I havent seen in forever show up and I was trying to show off and I done the dreadful 9. Live and learn and move on.

ALso I also want to really give thanks to Dalton Hammet with his donations to me to really get me in the air. Custom made 1/2a handles with lines. Parts for the golden bee also got hte golden bee from him.

When your on a budget this hobby can be tough at times.

ALso kudos to my gf who tagged along and was kind enough to record the video for us.

I think we've all done the figure '9' before.  The trick is to not do it when your kid is taking videos:

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Jamie,
I have rib sets available if you need them. Have you managed to get the big grin off your face yet? Good job with the loops.

Actually Pat the wing is perfectly fine. Its the forward part of the Fuselage that broke with the landing gear. it broke into 3 pieces. seems like clean breaks. Girlfriend is jsut telling me to rip off the fuselage and build another one onto the wing. WHat a girl!

A little CA to glue the fuselage back into one piece, scuff the paint around the breaks with some 100 grit and a bit of epoxy and silkspan or 1/4 oz class cloth to re-inforce the area and you can be back in the air in about an hour.

Take the motor off the front end first- it makes it easier to keep stuff aligned, and glue is hard to get out of the vent tubes and backplate inlet on a reed valve engine!

On the Little Satan- do some X-acto surgery on the center section from the bottom to gain access, and use some small diameter music wire to replace both the leadouts.

It is tight- but you can usually get at the wire to make the bends at the bellcrank end with a small long nosed needle nose pliers.  No fancy wrapping needed- make a 90 to go down through the bellcrank, another 90 to bend it fwd on the bottom, one more to go up to the wire again ( think small square )- and snip it off just above the leadout with a small wire snip.  1/2A planes can't exert enough pull to straighten out the wire -

Glue the piece of sheeting back in, make similar square loops at the wingtip to attach the line clips to and you are back in the air.  Of course this assumes you are not like me - and drop a screwdriver or plier through the wing just as you finish the repairs!

Glue the piece of sheeting back in ...

Gluing that piece back in is made easier if you cut the piece out so that it tapers to the inside of the hole, and try to use the tip of the knife when you're doing it.  That way it locates itself -- like the top of a Jack-o-lantern -- when you go to glue it back in.

Ive been wanting to build another Satan.

I love the way my lil black and orange looks. I remember SShobbies having them for 26 bucks last year and when I went to order one they were gone. SO i ended up spending almost 40 at brodak. But brodak also sells ribsets for them. So I wanna build another.

I might jsut scratch the RIngmasters fuselage as I still have the balsa sheet that was laser cut so I can easy trace the outline for the fuse from that and scratch the rudder and Ele. Use one of them plastic motor mounts that mounts the motor and landing gear together.

Now to finish my Sterling 1/2a warbird FW-190 :)

It's a good idea to trace the outline of all parts on back of the plans sheet (or other paper) so you can make replacements.

A figure nine is the first maneuver we learn after round-n-round.  ;D  8)

Jamie,
The plans have all parts full scale. You can trace any of the parts from the plans and cut the parts you need. I do my plans that way so it is easier to repair the results of "high angle of attack landings". y1
