Title: Actual names
Post by: john e. holliday on April 29, 2023, 07:30:51 PM
Went to a person profile to see who he or she was.   No name just letters - bdt-m. S?P

That's been happening lately over in CEF too. While it isn't required, it sure makes knowing "who's who where" easier to keep up with. I'm getting to the point where I can't track the many names some users use between my "heavy-rotation" sites (here, CEF, and RC Groups).

I'd like to see "real names" in signature blocks of members use cryptic usernames on these sites. Even just a first name helps.  S?P more.

I approve of rules requiring real names.  The worldwide app NextDoor Neighborhood used to require (and enforce) real names, but they gave up, so now people do whatever they want which is sad.  Imagine meeting a new neighbor “Hi I’m Paul” and they say “Hi I’m Jamma-Lamma-Ding-Dong” (when you’ve heard the guy’s wife call him Carl).

Some of us have had identity theft situations and we’re not supposed to use our real names online if we can avoid it.

Some people “enjoy” the anonymity of a screen name.

Some people REQUIRE the anonymity because if we knew who they were their lives could be in danger.  You know who you are.

Answering for a friend…

I don't necessarily think it needs to be someone's entire legal/payroll signature name. For me it is just an issue of courtesy. "Hi, my name is Jim. I'm an airplane addict." Now a connection can be made between us.

If an issue comes up in sites/forums like this, Admins can "fix" the issue easily enough (ban or switch to read-only). Several years ago I tried to play "connect the dots." While I succeeded with two, the others I failed miserably.

If you need my last name or mailing address, just shoot me a PM. I've got nothing to hide "among friends," but I don't think anyone needs to see my legal name here.or the other forums.

John is referring to an individual who used a ficticious name to create a login. I thought a person had to use their real name, then after, they could change it to a "pen name". I did look at the types of posts the person was writing, and they seem legitimate, likes C/L, certainly not troll-like. I could be wrong, but suspect the possibility that this individual contacted the admin team here to have his name removed because of problems by others.

Greatest problem with using one's real name has to do with search engines, and the lack of privacy these days on-line. Plus, there is nefarious activity out there, were some sites actually combine your personal information made available to anyone for a small fee but reveal enough to essentially destroy your privacy. But they also want you to contact them so you can tell them to stop, which is to me, another way to get more info from you.

Problem is that governments just about everywhere it seems, do nothing to stop this type activity. You are basically on your own, unless you have the financial means (wealth) to hire a legal and technical team to pursue them. Very few of us have such resources, talking about $6,000 starting, and that was almost 20 years ago.

How in the world can someone verify everyone's real name ??  I usually use my real name, but there are times I haven't.  Especially if it's some sort of specialty website I have to register for just to find an answer to one problem I will never encounter again and probably never visit the website after I find what I'm looking for.
