"51/60 size profile"

A local flyer has a ST 51 he wants to build a profile around. He is a sport flyer and not interested in competition. I thought of a couple, Tom Farmers profile and profile Buccaneer.

If you take an existing full body design what do you need to change if you make it a profile?

The fuselage width.

I believe you should also move the engine centerline down, to keep the same vertical CG. There's a set of twins in a more-recent-than-a-year Flying Models (40 size); the only change in the profile between them is the engine centerline.

buccaneer 746p profile with a st51 is a good chioce stock motor with master/airscrew 12/6 3blade prop

Hi James,

Having built a few profiles over the years from plans that were meant to be full fuselage, I don't see a noticeable problem in your "Sport" flier doing the same. The '57 Nobler was the first one I *converted* (after a crash destroyed the fuselage! LOL!!) and it flew as well as ever. That was in about 1965. The "main" problem with profiles, as you know, is not having enough substance, sometimes, to keep away engine vibrations. That and they are more prone to twisting in the aft end.

Tell him to pick a plane and just make the fuselage a profile! It has been done many, many times. And even some WERE competition planes.

The Buccaneer 746 Profile is a good one like Alan said.

Larry Cunningham's Mo' Best is great with the ST G.51.

IMHO one of the best profiles for especially a ST G51 was Dave Trible's Sukhoi. Heartbeat Models, if you can find one.

If you are going to use a kit wing or build from plans of a full fuse airplane be sure to move the bellcrank (inboard or outboard) so that the pushrod comes out along side the profile fuse. Most full fuse pushrods come out dead center on the wing!

Noel Drindak made some type of profile some time back that was plenty big and I think it used a SV airfoil so I am sure it flew well.

One more addition. Tom Morris makes a kit of the SV 22 profile that is really nice. May be more than you are looking for though. 60" span. But you did say a 60 size.

He has a ST .51 he wants to use. I remember the Bezerker from PAMPA plans by Noel, jsut wasn't sure if it was a bit more than the 51 would handle, although I ran the 51 in my Shark for 8 years or so.

For 2010 I have been flying a Mike Garmon designed Wedell Williams Racer using an ST .51. That is a 60" plane with a lot of body but the ST handles it very easily and has a nice slow speed. It is very capable of the full pattern and has a nice side profile in the air.

The engine on the Buccaneer 746 Profile and the Encore 40 Twins Profile version have had the engine moved to a location so the vertical center of gravity problem has been fixed. Order the plans to the Encore 40 Twins which includes a full bodied and a profile version of the same airplane. It also explains what we went through to reset the engine thrust line to get the vertical CG in its proper and respective place. Both available from Flying Models.

HI Dalton,

I remember Mike flying the original. it was a very capable, easy to build (constant chord), sorta scale model. Mike always designed good flying planes, I sure do miss him!

Besides the Berserker, there's a Profile P-51 in the PAMPA plans list that was designed for the G.51. Hard to beat a P-51...but we have had at least one Brodak P-40 profile ARF with a G.51. The owner/flier is an Expert class flier, and he said he liked the combination. A kit would be a lot more satisfactory than an ARF, of course.
