Action from It's Only a Hobby Coxy Hazel Race

We had great weather yesterday for Jim Renkar's Its only a hobby 1/2 a contest. We fly 1/2A stunt in the morning and 1/2A race in the afternoon.

Here's the action from the 4th heat of yesterday's 1/2A Coxy Hazel Race.

The rules are that you must fly a "stock" 1/2A Skyray (the "Hazel" part), and it must be powered by a Cox Reed Valve engine using an integral tank from a BlackWidow or Golden Bee engine (the "Coxy" part). You must start the engine by hand flipping---no spring or electric starters allowed.

The race is 100 laps on 35 foot 0.012 lines (supplied by organizers) using Sig 15% Champion fuel (also supplied by organizers).

You can see it is a hoot. Fred Krueger organizes the race and probably will chime in with the final times and winners.

Also one can't let this event go by without commenting on the food supplied by Rich Tupper---Biscuits, Gravy and eggs in the morning followed by pulled pork sandwiches with corn on the cob for lunch. Rich actually arrived at the site at 1AM and setup his smoker.

this may be a stupid question but I thought you were supposed to run 25 to 35% with the cox .049 engines?  I am curious what props were used as well.

For our racing we use 15% nitro (Sig) and it works just fine. In the race I used an APC 5.7x3 since my Black Widow isn't a real high rev'er. If it hadn't been for my down line snagging the top of Bill Calkin's hat when I tried to pass him, I would have done a bit better.

For Stunt, the popular engine is the Norvel Big Mig 049.

We allowed commercial props (no fiberglass or carbon fiber) of 5x3 to 6x3 with any size in between.  I will be posting more of the race.  You can readily see how well the Cox engines run on 15% nitro.

Hmm, that cap clipping and smackdown occurred at 3:32 into the movie cost me 1:35 (took off again @4:58). So if that hadn't happened I would have had a time @6:21---still out of the money at 4th fastest. So I still need some more speed!

Some club wimps (  ) think we should go to 40-42 foot lines to slow down the lap time in the Coxy Hazel race (which will increase the total time of course). For those of you who participated, what do you think? Would you like to slow down the lap speeds?

The short lines are OK with me . I was smart (devious) enough to quickly choose to be the pitman for my races. I knew that if I had to run around in the center circle fast for 100 laps that I'd be laying dead on the ground. Even my relatively younger designated pilot, Mike Schmitt, got pretty winded by the end of the race. Us old f_rts are finding it's getting harder and harder to keep up with you young whipper-snappers .

We just need to train Mike to stop walking backwards during the race--it's equivalent to whipping!

One object of this event is to let the poor PA pilots actually have some fun for a change, so it is important to make everyone happy!

That race is the only exercise I get each year. we need to go to shorter lines, say 30 ft. and MORE NITRO.
Just kidding I don't know if I could live though that.

Alan, the longer lines sound like a good suggestion.  All that is needed is a little more tip weight.  It would also give them more time to learn what racing is about with three up.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday
