Title: Action at TT Dallas
Post by: JHildreth on October 11, 2017, 09:04:56 PM
A few early birds showed up today (Wednesday).  Here are some pictures of activities at Dallas.  If it is possible and if I knew how, I would have captions on the pictures.  For now I'll just indicate the order.  The first two shots are of Dave Trible.  The next three are of Jose Modesto.  He is sporting two planes; an IC Patternmaster and an electric Shark.  The next shot is of Dale Gleason.  He has the (un)enviable task of warming up the judges.  Next comes Chicago's Chris Rud followed by Detroit's Bob McDonald.  Last, but not least, one of the Moon Brothers (Steve) showed up.

If I messed up a name please let me know so maybe I won't do it again.

Joe

We had a busy practice session this morning then went to the Fields community center for the pilots meeting.  Among other things at the meeting the potential weather issues were discussed and possible outcomes.  Basically nobody knows yet.  Tomorrow may be pretty sporty and Sunday a crapshoot.  Whatever goes on here is the flight order:
Title: Re: Action at TT Dallas
Post by: Dave_Trible on October 13, 2017, 01:35:14 PM
The format will be as follows:
Four rounds will be flown tomorrow,  two on each of two circles.  The single best score from each circle will be added for a score for the day.  The finals on Sunday (?) will have the top ten fly three rounds.  Their best two scores are added for a final score.  The 11 the place flyer from Saturday traditionally flies the warm up flight for the judges Sunday.  The top three seniors and the one junior flier can say "Viva La France"!!!!!

Why are they NOT enforcing the noise requirements in the FAI rules?????

They WILL be checked if someone thinks they are too loud at the WC's.. So, why not here????

Are you using a Db meter prior to takeoff?

Frank can't hear you--too many years of unmuffled model airplane engines.  When I asked him if he'd be checking noise, he thought I asked if he'd be checking lines.

Play (practice) time is over.  Tomorrow starts the serious stuff.  Here are some pictures of Friday's activities; the most important of which is the Pilot's Meeting.  In the meeting the pilots were briefed on the event's official activities, planes were weighed and the flight order was established.  A Q&A period followed.  Then it was back to the circles.

When I tried out for the team as a junior, I flew on only on Sunday. Assuming the format is the same, that's probably why she isn't in the flight order today

Matt is correct. Samantha flies tomorrow

Weather today was quite a bear. I flew to put points on the board, but conditions were rough: windy gusty and bumpy. Tomorrow is slated to be worse.

The wind began building early on and kept increasing.  There was some luck this time in drawing an early flight.  It became hard to make up any ground as it got more challenging as the day wore on.

Today's (Saturday) results and weather comments have already been posted.  Here are a few pictures of the proceedings.  The picture titles should explain content.

There was one casualty today.  Frank McMillan caught some bad luck in the dreaded second corner of the outside square.  Plane "pancaked" inverted.  There were some cracks and abrasions, but the plane appeared to be reparable.  We hope so since he qualified for the finals.

   Hey Wayne-O;
Yeah, That's Sean's model. It's a kit bashed Vector .40. Sean had hand drawn up a plan that he did as a kid for a Twister that looked like a Magnum, but I guess the straight wing with no leading edge sweep didn't quite cut it for him in recent times! It's just a project he has always wanted to do. It's not as light as he would like, but flies pretty well. It's really a new airplane, only about a dozen or so flights on it , maybe a few more, so given that and a lack of serious practice Ithink he showed pretty well for himself.  Looks like a great group pf guys he got to hang out with, some IO have known for a long, long time. Would have been a fun weekend just to spectate and catch up with some old friends!!
   Type at you later,
   Dan McEntee

The decision is made to fly.  Richard Oliver and Joe Gilbert are braving the wind to put up practice flights.  The judges decided they didn't want a warm up flight so Desperado went back into the car to fight another day.  It appears that some of the qualifiers might choose not to fly today.
Title: Re: Action at TT Dallas
Post by: Dave_Trible on October 15, 2017, 07:28:43 AM
A brief meeting.  Due to the wind 'catchers' will be stationed all around the circle to grab the airplane when it lands to keep it from flipping over.  The judges will score the original touchdown only.

Frank is up and away but he committed a little bit of an error in that he gave a hand signal to the judges fortunately his engine fired right away it didn't cost him anything in FAI it's not required to give a hand signal he could cause you problems in time but he's OK. I'm afraid and sad to say it's all for not the airplane didn't stand up in the wind after the accident yesterday and is now in kind of a heap on the ground

Thanks for the running commentary Dave!! You do this very well and it is greatly appreciated. The voice recognition thing is working well enough.
Good luck and "HELLO" to all in Dallas,

Dan I got to see your boy here.  He's flying well.

Dave, what is the maximum allowable wind speed?
In FAI it's 9 meters per second or 20. Something mph for 30 seconds.

Just so you all know how nasty the winds are today.  In the 1st round there were only 4 complete patterns and the wind never hit 20 mph on the meter at ground level.  I saw 18 several times.  18 mph of wind is TON of wind, and I MEAN A TON, to be flying patterns in and most planes today at this circle could not make it through the maneuvers.  It has been a very rough morning to say the least.  These guys are battling hard just to finish.

I did not make the trip...got corralled to help a good friend move a family member..I owe him big time so did my good deed

I have never flown a full pattern and never will..and a total fair weather flyer

But once, just as I launched, the wind picked up and I was in for a 6 minuet gusty ride and sweating like a marathon runner when it finally quit

I sat fascinated by this blow by blow (a pun) commentary

Thanks

Very sad I missed meeting a lot of guys I only know from these forums

Now we know who the team is and congrats from the old DOC, especially to Joe & Colleen as I know how hard they have worked.   Remember Joe and the ARF Nobler at Tulsa the first time I seen him.    Richard the old DOC is going to get that .40 going in a decent plane soon I hope.  Chris I haven't met yet.  But it looks like we have a good team. Quick question from the peanut gallery: I know that with appearance points the maximum possible score in AMA is 645 -- what's the maximum possible in FAI?  I assume that the scores I'm seeing for each round is the average of all the judges?  Were there three for the final round?

It should be noted that Joe made a very smart decision today.  He flew his piped plane yesterday when it was hot and the winds were somewhat tolerable and qualified easily.  Today in round one he flew the piped plane again and he struggled with it.  Still flew good for the conditions though.  He decided to give his .46 sized ringmaster with flaps a go.  He had made a few practice flights with it in the morning and it penetrated this mess pretty good.  I watched the second round flights from the side and he was close to 45 with it and it scored well.  He didnt get his clover points because it beeped real hard in loop 4 and he didnt get the exit.  He came back in round 3 and put it all together with that plane.  He used smaller plane on shorter lines going faster to penetrate the heavy winds we had today.  I for one took notice and it really has me thinking....... I didnt come up through the classic era with smaller planes and faster lap times.  What he did was a real eye opener for me!  Way to go Joe.

Congrats to all of the fliers for making it a hard fought contest.
Congrats to winners on their great accomplishment.  You will do us proud.  Kenny is as good an alternate as any country could ask for.

Thank you to Frank Williams and his team for running another very solid contest.  Thank you Bill Lee for being the FAI Jurist.
Thank you Motor Mouth Gang for all you do at all of our contests.

Now this is what I am talking about!!

OK, I talked to Howard. I didn't want to push to hard, as he must gave been feeling quite bad. I know I would have been.

My question is why didn't anyone help him out and get a new set of lines made along with a handle?

That's about a 10 minute job, even if you have to make up a new set of lines (with offset, presumably), and 0 minutes if you can use conventional lines. The wrap or crimp job wouldn't have to be pretty and it only has to last for 3 flights, so crimping it would probably be fine.

Moreover, since it's FAI, you could use conventional lines and add an extender for the offset (since the AMA rule about multiple connectors doesn't apply to FAI). There must be something more to this story.

    Brett

p.s. in fact, Howard, tell me what sort of length and offset you need and I can make up a set of lines to use as Golden State, and I already have a Paul handle.

Here are some pictures of finals day.  There were two stories today, the weather and round 3.  There was a 25 degree drop in temperature from Saturday and an increase in wind from 8-10 mph to 15-18 mph.  Fortunately, we were spared any rain.  The wind was treacherous and the flyers earned every point that the judges awarded to them.  There were some special accommodations instituted on landings due to the wind.  One was the use of "plane catchers" to prevent the planes from self destructing after they had stopped rolling.  Frank McMillan lost his plane.  Yesterday, he suffered a confrontation with the ground.  We had hoped his overnight repair work would allow him to finish the contest.  Unfortunately, some unseen (thus unrepaired) damage in the wing led to the plane's demise shortly after the beginning of his first flight on Sunday.  At the end of round 2, Chris Rud and Richard Oliver were comfortably ensconced in first and second place respectively.  Round 3 turned into a duel between Joe Gilbert and Kenny Stevens for the third position.  Joe switched from his blue piped ship to his Ringmaster at the end of round 1.  He felt that the Ringmaster would work better in the prevailing wind.  He put up a very good third flight in the tough conditions and held on to win out over Kenny.  Kenny put up a valiant effort, but came up just a little short.

The US team will sport a junior flyer in 2018.  Samantha Hines will be representing the US of A in France next year.  Congratulations Samantha.

The 2018 F2B new senior team members will be Chris Rud, Richard Oliver, and Joe Gilbert.  The first alternate is Kenny Stevens.  Very well done gentlemen!  We had an unexpected appearance by Orestes Hernandez, so I was able to get a picture of all the USA flyers.  Good luck to all in France.

Any successful event has been the result of a team of individuals, many of whom are behind the scenes.  Many thanks on a job well done go out to Frank Williams the judges and all those workers required to host one of these events.

I'll put up the awards and team member pictures in a following post.

Chris was struggling a bit to hoist the high-point trophy over his head.  Dude, you need to hit the bench press a bit more  LL~

Big congrats to Chris, Rich, Joe, Samantha, Kenny, and everyone else who put up flights and braved the winds.  I was exhausted just watching!

It’s always a treat to fly with the good folks of Dallas; better still to hang out with the out-of-towners, some of whom I have not seen in a very long time.  Throw in the the opportunity to participate in the team trials and it was a blast of a weekend!  Safe travels to everyone driving/flying home!

Sorry for the delay-just got back to KC.  I did not know about whatever problem Howard had.  I had no solid wire but sure could have made a new set of stranded.  I had just assumed he decided not to tempt Mother Nature as had others.

Just to be clear,  this is not an S1 Ringmaster.  It's a full- flapped Stunt airplane shaped to LOOK like a Ringmaster.

Howard's lines.  From what I heard he had been flying Saturday night and left his box with his handle and lines at the field.  The next morning it was gone.  Our field is adjacent to a public park and many people, including many homeless, have access to our field all the time.  If anything that is perceived to have any value is found there it will be taken.  It really is sad that people can't just leave what isn't theirs alone, and it really makes me mad at the same time.

I was searching for something on stuka stunt and---- inside a grass seed for CL circle thread -----back in April 2004, was a comment about flying in Oklahoma vs California...Tornado (wind) vs Earthquake  back n forth banter

I do not know any of these guys except what I read on the forums

BUT I thought it interesting what De Hill said quoted below

"No. But we do know how to fly in the wind.

One of our new members(Joe Gilbert) flew a Fox .35 powered ARF Nobler at the VSC in Tucson on that windy sunday. He survived and placed 19th. Not bad for an Intermediate flyer.

De Hill"
