My first ever elk! Not just that, but with a traditional 54cal Hawken muzzle loader. Firing a round ball and using genuine black powder.

More like an accidental discharge hitting the limb which fell on the elk killing him/her.

TC Hawken. 54cal. Open sight. Firing round ball with 100grs FFF black powder. 75-80yds. She rand 50yds and dropped. 5:45 pm. 7:53 before I had her quartered up and on the game cart and ready to go. (Had to hike out to GET the game cart). 9pm before I dragged nearly 400lbs of elk to the truck. I was DONE!

Hi Gary,
I built a 54 cal black powder riffle from a TC kit and had a blast building it. Browned all the metal parts (no bluing) with traditional buck horn sights, linseed oil for the stock finish, steamed, polished and hand rubbed to a high luster hand polished all the brass parts (it was a fun break from building stunters).
The only thing I ever shot with it was an old bowling pins and steel silhouettes at some of the black powder shoots I went to. It was pretty accurate at 50 to 100 yards but not much more than that, I tried shooting at 55 gallon drums at 200 yards and missed.
That was a dandy shot from the yardage.

Mikey, if you liked that, then the Mule deer I shot with it last year at 117yds should be of great interest.
That ball went clear through. This one might have as well. There is an entry into the inside of the off side shoulder, but haven't looked into enough to see if it exited.
