About time! 5 year Jamison
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:35:44 PM »
I really don't particularly like "big" models.  It took me 5 years to get around to finishing this puppy.  Red silk with red dye in the dope, grey epoxy, trim tape for the stripes.  L&J Fox with RSM 10x6,5.75,5.5 Prop.  Two flights so far.  It may need tip weight, it definitely needed line adjustment.  Seems smooth, but maneuverable.  More as I get experience with it.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Hey Larry,

Just bring it out to the field on Saturday and Antone and I can help you get it trimmed out.

Larry has finally got cooking on a "man sized" plane. #^ If you are not happy with your Fox, you can borrow my Saito 40A. I guarantee it will haul that plane like nobody's business.

The pictures don't do it justice.  It fit nicely in the area behind the seats in my new Ford Ranger, and yes it fly well.  Larry didn't mention the issues with the engine, it had zero compression.  We started it with my electric starter, but other than flying laps it was useless.  This is a fairly new engine, I gave Larry a new piston and cylinder for a Fox 35 to replace the ones in the engine.  When he took it apart there was no head gasket.  Anyway when he installed a gasket the compression came to life.   He also didn't mention that for the 5 years it took him to finish it, I was prodding him the entire time.  I look forward to flying this plane, and no matter what happens he can't say a word.... n1 y1 LL~

Thanks for all the compliments!

Yes, 5 years is a bit long, but I have completed a bunch of other models in the meantime, including 3 versions of the Sky Sport and the upcoming Sky Streak.

BTW the Jamison weighs in at 35 ounces engine, with an added spinner, and all.

It turns out, according to Eric Rule, that a head gasket is not used on the L&J Fox, but mine probably had the head too loose, and, the plug was a short with no washer. For the time being, I am leaving the gasket in, and may up the nitro to suit. Anyway, compression is where it should be now, and it'll get a workout on Friday.

After installing two different Foxes with no joy, I put in my trusty Brodak 40.  Brodak engine in a RSM plane?  I feel a disturbance in the Force!!!  The plane now flies great, but the gods of stunt will get you for blasphemy somehow, and after today's flying session, they blew the model off the cleaning bench onto its tail.  Crunch!  OK, I will spend my time in repair purgatory, put in some bench time on all 4 of the Foxes I own ( L&J Ceramic (new), Foster (new), my mod, and one -gasp- stock).  I will then bow to the forces of the powers what am, and install a Fox something.

One of the nicest-looking Jamisons I've seen.  I've resisted the temptation to build one only because of that elevator hanging out in the breeze.  I wonder what Bud was thinking:  that elevator seems like an after-thought!

Actually, building it went just fine, but everything that could go wrong on the finish did, including dropping it with wet epoxy to grab, then having it fall off the building stooge and cracking the tail, covering the fuselage with heavy carbon, not the veil (sanding that stuff is "not fun")  Then the silver finish didn't cover for beans, and I had to sand it off and switch to grey.  By this time I hated the model.  I am still not even fond of it.  It has a lot of good flying to do before it will warm the cockles of my heart.  ( Anyone have a clue what that means?)

Frankly, $300 and it is yours for the taking.  Engine, lines, handle, the whole 9 yards.  I REALY don't like big models.

If I bought it, then I would lose appearance points! S?P  Oh, it hit me, that is only for the other classes of stunt. mw~  Stay with it Larry as I think Andy B. will help you get it sorted. LL~ LL~
