It's a given fact that they don't have a good return on their investment for their purpose. They're   Extremely High Dollar Mainteance. It is to a point now that when they break or need a major over haul. They are left alone and later taken down and the blades are buried. A drive to or an aerial photo of the area
 near Palm Springs. They are just a huge eye sore

For a decade now my Cen Texas town has several massive loads heading to the wind farms every few weeks.  Like noted--- the defunct, caught fire, high wind damaged, just get pulled off line and usually stay in place....cheaper to keep paying rent....especially since almost every operator is tax payer subsidized (in Texas)

the you tube videos of the making largest blades and transport are worth watching....disgustingly so....not very green at all IMO

Wind energy can still be useful.  Present thinking is all wrong;  larger is not better.  Big windmills are not more robust than smaller ones.

Smaller diameter, lower power will have a  greater MTBF than the monsters.

Make up for lower power with greater numbers;  even several on one mast, if land area is a problem.

Balsa is the wrong core material.  Reinforced plastic foam and carbon fibre .

I like ‘em. They do use a lot of vortex generators that could go to stunt planes, which may be the reason for the recent vortex generator price hike.

I think I read somewhere that the demand for these things is starting to drop so the balsa supply should be improving and hopefully the cost will go back down.
