I remember it well. John soon moved the contest balsa to the back room because he hated selling it to Scouts for dioramas and stuff. Jim Damerell built the Lethal Lucy....terrific flyer and he flew it in both OTS and Classic.
I believe that it isn't a Smoothie but a Thunderbird?
The field is the same, except the trees are 20' higher.
Larry probably has TWICE as many engines and stuff now....he retired soon after the video was shot.

De gave me a copy of this video decades ago. I love that video. Such a wonderful trip back in time. I also thoroughly enjoy sensing De's enthusiasm for the sport of C/L, as well as feeling his appreciation for the history of it that comes through it. De's like a kid in a candy store in Larry's basement! To me, this is a great little video to just kick back with a hot cup of coffee on a cold winter's night... and get a glimpse into what it was like. Great times.
We've lost so much and so many since this video. :'(

That's very cool. The Polka Dot All American was built by Doug Benedetti and won Concours at the 1992 Nats. The silk job is second to none! Doug gave it to me last year and I flew it at this years Brodak and took a 3rd in Advanced OTS. All period correct with a 4 bolt Fox. Still flies and looks great. One of my prized possessions.

De what a video. Larry was one of the first of my heroes I met while at my first NATS. 1964 Grand Prairie NAS. Seeing his basement makes me feel better about my shop. A million stories in that basement. I also remember meeting John Miske when JJ & I atendended the Chickopee NATS. Thanks for the trip back in time. H^^

Provide me with a dumpster and 2 hours in Scarinzi's shop, and I would have it straightened up so that actual model building would be possible.

Having had the privilege of seeing Larry's Basement first hand, you would not believe the C/L history there. MANY of the airplanes are actually in superb condition. Larry's silk and dope finishes must be seen to be fully appreciated. You must remember that De is a C/L junkie and a C/L dumpster diver... he loves finding hidden and dusty relics and such. (As do I, too.)
