Sneak Preview II, or, The Rest of the T-Rex...
« on: June 05, 2011, 09:50:47 PM »
Ever since it was introduced, it has been quite popular to "kit-bash" the Brodak "T-Rex" kit into a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, or "Jug". This is Keith Sandberg's newly finished version that started life as an ARC kit. It is likely the most modified one out there to date.

Keeping it brief, out of the box this particular kit was assembled with a lot of bad, even rotted, wood in places and also had countless alignment and construction issues. Keith spent a lot of extra time and effort rebuilding and fixing many of those issues along with adding a very long list of his own modifications. Some of those mods were cutting away and rebuilding most of the nose and cowl area to reshape it, shortening the nose and tail of the fuse slightly, making all new flaps, elevators, fin and rudder, relocating the main landing gear and making new doors, stiffening the fuse internally and extensive use of carbon veil on the exterior. Finish is all Brodak dope and power will be a Saito .56.

Initial test flights are planned for tomorrow evening. y1

 Some detail shots...

I forgot to mention, the scratchbuilt belly tank and bombs are attached with 4-40 bolts and are easily removeable if desired for contest flying. y1

Nope no pilot Doc. The canopy was already attached in the kit, sort of. It is actually a bit of a concern, Keith reinforced it a bit with some epoxy around the perimeter, but we'll see how long it actually stays put. ???

Now that is a great example of "kit bashing'!  I hope it flies every bit as good as it looks!  I always love a good looking WWII fighter model. ;D

Keith really has some great workmanship on his projects. Should fly as well as it looks.
