A repurposed gizmo
« on: December 25, 2020, 02:39:56 PM »
I needed a dust collector system, without parting with any $$$, for sanding cyano or resin applied to balsa. The vacuum chamber of a vacuum forming unit I have fit the bill but what brought it all home was an ancient Rainbow vacuum cleaner. The Rainbow system uses a pool of water in its base to filter and trap the dust and fumes. (Which begs the question; which came first, a bong or the Rainbow vacuum?) It's also much quieter than a shop vac.

Sanding the cyano was beginning to affect my eyes and breathing. Using the unit eliminated the effects and wearing a mask made it even better. The plastic backed sandpaper works great. It easily unclogs and seems to keep cutting longer.

And for the DIY guy, there is a mix-mash of plumbing, 5 gallon paint pail, and lid makes a decent wet/dry vac into a water-filter too! I've been wondering if the vacuum might be strong enough to capture the vapors for a loss-less system that may be run indoors.
