Finishing "E" models, a thought.

With the advent of "E" models and sans the use of fuel, possibly a new "HEADING" should be added to the "Paint and Finishing" area.

Yes, "E" models may come in contact with IC fuel, but I'm thinking "In a perfect world."

I know I'm rethinking my finishing methods now that my interest is "E."

This new "Heading" would eliminate the "overlapping" of systems, materials, paint or techniques related to IC, now that with "E" it's no longer in the loop.

A category that specifically relates to non fuel finishes and materials could be a benefit.

It would be for myself to have an understanding of materials used by those modelers that have been active with "E" for some time.

Would help eliminate the trial and error.

Many have already paved the way with successful applications of finishing materials.

We already have a finishing section. If you have a specific question its easily asked there.

You still require a filler/ base on bare balsa, same as an IC model...

The only alternative to traditional finishes is maybe water-based finishes,
but are you going to chance warpage over a wing or fuse.?

Metallics that otherwise might not be fuel-proof is an option.

Weight of the finish still takes priority.

Just like a seperate "heading" for "E" setups and "IC" setups.

Seperated for a reason.

Same with prep and finishing.

IMHO, that's how I view it.

I think most would be surprised at the water based product.......
Waterborn has been the paint, by law, used in CA for many years......and the folks at Mercedes have been painting their cars in the factory with waterborn for well over a decade.

The prep on a model can vary with waterborn.......using water based polyurethane and talc for instance.....

Since the water/carrier evaporates fully, the weight is in the color in finish coats, followed by a "traditional" top/final coat of auto clear or dope.

The company I work for has been painting all the ground equipment including trucks with water base for the last 10 years.  The initial products worked but were not durable.  That has changed in the last 5 years and there is no noticeable difference in appearance or durability with waterborne and VOC based paints.

Does anyone have a idea what a PITA this large forum is to run now? As I said just start a thread in the finishing section for e models. We have a finishing area now. I am not going make another forum for it separately.

I agree totally,,
finishing methods are the same for virtually anyone I know who is using electric now,, the advantages of Urethane are still the same,, excellant gloss, polishing and application,, the ONLY difference is that an e model only occasionally gets spit on by a fuel model,, the waterborne paint systems were used on glow models so even that crosses over,,

there is plenty of room for finishing in the existing section,, if you want to differentiate, then just use a heading for your post that says something like "electric finish question" or such,,

The Airline I work for used a water based aluminum primer for a little while over 5 years ago . We've since switched back to the toxic Hexivalent Chromium stuff due to better corrosion protection.

I'm curious what the weight of the new water based paints are when applied on a model vs. a traditional dope vs. a poly death paint finish?

Maybe time to delete the ones that have not any activity for several months.   My thoughts.
