No Waitin' At The L-Pad
« on: December 31, 2010, 11:21:23 AM »
Hi All,On a cross country training flight I took Wednesday I stopped in Muncie and had a nice lunch with Allen Goff. After swapping as many full size and model aviation stories we could share in a lunchtime it was time to fly home. The tower gave clearance for a direct flyover of AMA for photos. It seams the only use the L-Pad is getting is for a few donuts in the snow. LL~ LL~ LL~It appears there is "No Waitin" for practice flights.I personally can't wait for a chance to wait for my practice flight!!!Lord know I need it.Summers coming,Jeff

Hey Will,Sure was the Pacer.Allen seamed to think it would be a nice scale subject.(It is a gorgeous 2 tone green and dakota white Piper PA-22/20 tailwheel converted TriPacer)The "PETE" is a little hard to hand prop on the snow and ice and it would have taken 2 fuel stops and a day to get there!!! Maybe next trip.Later,Jeff

It was easy for me to recognize the wing of the Pacer, not so for the L-pad

I am NOT converting my scale Tri-Pacer to a Pacer.  Got it too far along!  Do you think the Pacer was a "little" warmer than the Pete would have been?

It would be nice if the L-pad were blocked off or mined to keep the vandals out.

Looking at the picture it appears that the donuts were south of the L-pad, not on it. note the chain link fence North of the tire prints is along the South side of the L-pad.

And I want to get in line to fly also.

If you look closely the tracks are on the west end of the pad.  You can see the shelter is south of what is normally the pit area.  Then the two circles on the pavement that runs north&south are east of the shelter.  The circle drive is on the south side of the shelter.  Maybe MA's security ought to wake up.  The camera angle is looking to the SE or SSE.

OK, I can see the road in the upper right side that separates the L pad form the R/C stuff. The parking lot and "possibly" a couple porta johns (??)  To the right of the wing strut, I see donuts on the #1 circle (as I seem to remember the numbering) and to the left, and above, the strut (hidden under the snow! LOL!!) should be circles #3 and #4,or the "L" Part.  It that correct going on memory from 2004?

WE day something that looked like that on the ground the night of, and day after, Christmas! LOL!!

Jeff, thanks for picking up the lunch, it was nice to meet Bill too. Upon leaving Jay Mealy stop me to say hello and informed me that he owned the restaurant. Jay was on staff at AMA for many year and bought the eatery after retirement. The food and service was really great and I would recommend it to anyone coming to Muncie for the "Nats" or any other reason. Pray your flying event with the kids goes well and you have many, many kids to share in C/L flying, there should be enough monecote for the project. See ya at Wright/Pat next month?

Blessings
Allen

If you can stand the windchill you could fly today, central Indiana is devoid of snow. I believe the high for today is in the 30s.

That's the one at the Muncie airport, Howard.  A bit of a drive from the filed for midday meals, but fine for evening.
12th street is good, but Muncie has more restaurants per capita than most cities their size!!  I wanna try them all!

A couple of them we liked closed.  There was a nice one a block south of McGalliard.  All I remember is that it had tablecloths and weird lamps.  Then there was the 909.  It was really good, but I heard it burned down.  I like the mush at the Twelfth Street.

Hi Howard,The resturant we ate at was right on the airport.A guy on a golf cart met us as we taxied up and parked us real close to the door. The lower dining room was all windows and the view of the ramp and incoming/outgoing traffic was worth the price of lunch for sure!!!The food was excellent and reasonable.Definately worth a try.Jeff

I liked the breakfast the boy scouts put out when they were let on the field.  Even lunch is not that bad.  Yes as my daughter said while eating at a fine restaurant in Wichita KS one year, "This is better than McDonalds".  Almost threw her out the door.  First year at Muncie for me there was a bar-b-que restaurant I was looking forward to the second year and it was closed.  Yes the 12th Street was a good place to eat if you could get a table for breakfast.

Chris I guess you haven't been to the AMA site yet.  They have big metal sheds they keep all the equipment and supplies in.  We had fun one year trying to round up every to get the circles ready to go.  If you Google earth you will find the Muncie site.  All control line is in the North half with RC taking up the rest.  The exception is when they take over the L Pad for special RC events.
