A real B.O.M. ! This guy sure makes me proud. =)
« on: February 11, 2008, 12:05:03 PM »
This is my youngest son. I built him a Shoestring trainer a few years ago but he just did not take to C/L like his older brother. He talks about doing R/C planes but that is something I could not teach him. He sure likes to build models.

I am not sure I would have taken the time he did to tie on the sails and put in all the little strings. It took him awhile to do get this done.

He is a BOM's.

Now don't take this thread in the wrong direction please.

If he is really interested in RC locate somebody in the local RC club to take him up on a buddy cord. Anything to keep the model interest going even if RC. Later he may decide he likes the "FEEL" of CL rather than the radio. But the interest should be encouraged no matter what. Especially since he obviously already has  skills and is a do-er not a talk-er.

David Miller is right on.  Annndd - - the field of R/C boats is another posibility that may keep his creativity going.

Don't let him get big headed, but, that ship model looks great.  Don't discourage him on anything he does with his hands, unless it is safe cracking.  Growing up with my brothers we learned to do all kinds of models, ships, boats, cars, trains and airplanes.  Didn't matter if it was wood or plastic.  Just wish more kids would learn to use their hands in a constructive way.  DOC Holliday

Paul,

Must be a stunt ship, with all that area!   ;D

It's obvious your son takes pride in his work, and has the patience to build. Give him time, and lots of encouragement to fly.

Thanks guys!
I am very proud of him.
He makes A's & B's in school and likes to read. One of his friends came over to the house and saw that Josh had a 2 inch think book sitting on his desk. He asked Josh if he had to do a book report or it. Josh said "no just reading it for fun". He watches a lot of Discovery and History channel. Most mornings before school he will watch the TV show "How it's made".
He likes to shoot of rockets so we do that once in awhile. He has also masterd the ripstick. http://youtube.com/watch?v=hWoudfPmmfk

What will they think of next.

Like Paris Hilton never missing a chance to draw attention to herself, this looks like a good opportunity for me to drag out one of my models that is not an airplane.

Next time your are up Nord, have him check out

http://www.wooshrocketry.org/

They have a launch at nearby bong state park about every other weekend in the summer.  My 13 yr old won't build airplanes but loves
big boom rockets (that I can't afford).  We go about once a month and launch D and E powered birds.

Any reason to get my kids in the shop, I take it

This winter it was 4 8th grade boys for the future cities competition.

they did not win anything this year, but had a good time.

Sorry I don't live near you Rootbeard, I could have him flying R/C in no time at all.  If he really is interested I would highly recommend one of the simulator systems you can get now to help learn to fly R/C.  At the AMA convention I had the time to check out a couple of different systems and was quite impressed with the realism they offered. The job he did on the ship shows craftsmenship runs in the family, it really looks great and you rightly should be proud.
