If you apply a water slide decal to a plane that has been painted with dope and then go over the decal with clear butyrate, will it attack the decal or seal it and protect it?
Thanks

Hello Mike,
Yes it will attack it
Yes it will seal it
Yes it will protect it
Let me explain.
If you spray too much dope on the decals, it will soften them, and more than likely distort them.
What you want to do is spray three or four dry light coats on them to seal them from the later wet coats.
After the initial dry coats have dried for about an hour, you can now apply the clearcoats wet.
Let each coat dry four to five hours before the next coat.
Even though the dope may feel dry to the touch, the material underneath is still soft and outgassing.
It is my belief that clearcoats that are rushed, are what leads to distorted decals and fillets lifting.
the underlieing(?) dope is still soft and the outer layer is drying and thus shrinking at a faster rate than the
earlier coats thus causing it to lift and pull away from the radiused surface.
The clearcoats will seal the decals from fuel and prevent them from being damaged from handleing.
Plus it just looks so much better because you wont be able to the see the clear part of the decal material. It is now buried in the clearcoat.
I hope this answers your question. Let us know how it works out for you and post pictures.
