A Place to Build
« on: May 14, 2008, 01:45:21 PM »
Hello Everyone

I have not posted my building for long time, because i have moved.
Outside that is.  Now i have a new place to build in my backyard.
My wife helped me get this new shop and had it delivered a few weeks
back. :o  I have been leveling it and building tables and shelving ever
since. :)

I am really happy , I think it turned out nice and now i can start building
planes again. Here are a few pics:

Thanks Guys

Thats why my wife wanted me out of the basement. Dust was getting all over the laundry
and when i fired up the air compressor to paint  mw~ mw~ mw~.
But she was great with helping me find another place to do my modeling.
Im just glad to be done i have not glued a piece of balsa in two months.

I am sure glad i decided to get back into control line flying.  The planes
you guys build are works of art.  Stunt Flying is awsome and hopefully
one day i will be out the flying soon. AP^

Speaking of benchtops. What benchtops are those or, where did you purchase them,(or make them?).

Hi Bryan, congradulations on your new shop it looks great.  I guess I missed the original post about it, but, what is the deminsions.  I like the idea of peg board as that is what I plan for one section of wall in mine.  Also where are you going to store your planes?  I have one wall stated for planes with shelving below for kits, plans and other stuff.  Again your shop looks great,  DOC Holliday

Hi Proparc

My benchtops are 3/4" Birch Plywood from Home Depot and Poplar trim over 2x4 framing.
Everything is screwed with glue.  The tops where then sanded and sealed with Minwax
water-based Polycrylic Clear Gloss twice.    That's It.

Hello John E. Holliday

My shop is only 10'x15' so most of my planes will go back in the house down in the basement.
Soon i will have a connecting garage to the shop then i'll have extra storage and a better
place to paint.

I like the Peg Board idea too. I picked up on the idea from this Forum from John Miller with the
"The Last Pathfinder" build.  Thanks, John Miller  your Plane Building and your Shop is top notch.

To tell you the truth i get most my idea's or stuff i need to learn about from this site.  My father
who showed me how to fly control line in the late seventies only knows the basic's .  So i learn
from Stunthanger then share back with him.  There's not to many Control liners in Colorado..... D>K

                                                                                          Thanks   Bryan

I wish I could claim that shop as mine, but it belongs to Gordan Delaney, who graciously allows me to build there once in a while.

In all of the pictures, I did not see a shop vacuum!  Guess you will just let the saw dust accumulate.  That will make it more homely.

Just envy talking.  LOL

Like Doc I too have some questions.  First off the place looks great and when I retire I want to build something very similar.  Now to the questions.  Any provisions for heating or air conditioning?  Did you run electricity underground or overhead and did you install circuit breakers at the room?  Last but not least was it built from a kit or did you do the design the building yourself?  Like I said it looks great and I want one, oh boy do I want one.

Thanks Andrew

The shop was an office building that are renters used to use.  My wife knew i needed a new
space to build at so she asked if they where selling it. So it was already assembled when i
recieved it.  It has a baseboard heater 120v , no air. But does have a skylight that opens
and a side window.  The electrical is barried underground to a detecated circut in the base
ment.
Thanks to my wife for asking i now have my own space to work in.  It is small but when i
have the garage put in it should be complete.  Basically a shop about 15'x20' would be the
idell size. You could have everything plus a paint room and storage for your planes.

I've built workshops in 3 homes I've owned since about 1963.  (prior to that, I rented, and couldn't build a shop).  The bench top gets beat-up no matter how hard I try.  So now they are 3/4" MDF SCREWED on with deck screws.  Now, I can replace the bench top at any time.

I have found the secret to a productive shop is NEATNESS!  Really, the pictures some of you have posted lead me to wonder how you can do ANYTHING in that mess!

I keep tools, balsa, supplies in a separate room.  Sure, I have to run back and forth a lot, but my workbench is always ready for a project without having to spend a lot of time scraping off the junk that accumulates!

My main bench is 4' X 12' and contains only drill press, band saw and disc sander.  Everything else is stored away elsewhere.

Thanks Bryan for the information.  I agree that 15x20 would seem the ideal size and that is what I am shooting for when I get my new home in Georga.  (First I have to sell the house in California)  For me air conditioning would be a must if I was to use it in the summer in Georga.  I figure a wall mount would get the job done, my son is in the building business I will seek out his help.  I want cabinets for the balsa and supplies and a 4x8 table to build on.  Currently I work on a 2x8, which I think would be OK if it were not up against a wall.  My new shop will have the table in the cente of the room with access all around it.  Don't yet know how I will have my power tools set up.  Anyway thanks for the thread.
