A personal Note _Updated 2/18/2015
« on: February 16, 2015, 06:56:20 PM »
Hi Guys

Last August I started on a journey that is about to come to fruition in 9 days.  Many of the health issues I have were being exaserbated by all the weight I had put on over the past ten years due to not being able to exercise much due to the chronic back and knee pain.  I played football until I was 26 and now the arthritis, ruptured discs and multiple back and knee surgeries have taken a toll on this once athletic physique (that was a while back I admit).  Sometimes I wish I had never seen a football.  My blood pressure is under control with meds and I have sever sleep apnea and have to sleep with a C Pap machine...not pleasant;

Last August I started a process to have gastric sleeve surgery and it has taken from then to now to go through all the tests and jump through all the hoops that my insurance company required.  I did qualify and will be having the surgery next week.  Basically what they do is remove most of the stomach leaving you with a pouch about the size of a small banana .  I was put on a liquid diet 6 days ago and still have 8 more to go on it before I have the surgery.  I have lost 14 lbs in six days on this diet.  Nothing but Atkins or Slim Fast Shakes, Protein powder shakes and sugar free Jello.  Gotta tell you, it aint easy to stay on.  The purpose of the diet is to shrink your liver before surgery.  Makes it easier for the surgeon to do the procedure.

I rarely ever ask this but for those of you who are religious I would appreciate a 5 second prayer for a successful prodcedure.  For those of you who are not religious, well a "Good Luck" is OK.   I have never had any problems with anethesia but I have had it many times with the numerous surgeries over time But I can use all the prayers I can get....GOD KNOWS....

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully in a few months if I drink a grape soda and turn sideways, you might think  I am a thermometer.... LOL

Kindest Regards,
Mike

UPDATE - I have lost 13 lbs in a week on this liquid diet.  It is not easy but that really surprised me to lose that much in 7 days.

Mike-

We're wishing you all the best. To be eligible for the surgery, you had to have done some good work. My son-in-law had the surgery and is sticking to the post surgical agenda. So far, he's done quite well over the past couple years and is quite happy. I'm sure you won't reqret the move. We're with you!

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the well wishes and prayers.  I Plan to come out of this just fine but a little extra insurance does not hurt a thing.  I know the end result will be well worth the sacrifices.    Again, your words mean more than you know to me....

Good luck, Mike. I'm a veteran of many many surgeries, big and small. And no matter how simple or complex the doctors say, it's always something to take very seriously. Try your best to be patient, as recovery is always tougher than they would have you believe or seem to understand. We've never met, but some of my best friends know you and I want to see you do well. Hang in there, you have my best wishes and I'll await progress reports whenever you are up to it. I hope you have close family or friend who can keep your doctors communicating with each other and staying on the same page. That's a big part of the process. I'll keep you in mind. And again, best of luck.

My best thoughts go with you. But as I understand it, you have a serious diet program to follow after the surgery. Do it and you will be a "happy camper".

Best wishes!

 A friend of mine went through what you are about to go through, he stared out at 406 lbs and two years later we do call him "slim", I think he tips the scales at 195 now. praying for a successful surgery and recovery. He's got you covered.

Hi Mike, Good luck to you and your surgeons! I've got a few on my prayer list and now you'll be there too! As one who looked the grim reaper squarely in the eye I am most grateful to Him for pulling me through! I too use a C Pap machine I hope you take it along to the hospital with you! They'll help you with it if you can't do it yourself! A night nurse observed my erratic night breathing and "turned me in"! I am most grateful she did! At 76 I have regained more energy than I knew I'd lost!

Good Luck,

Phil Spillman
