A little help from your friends

I have an old McCoy 35, it was the first big engine that I ever bought. Cost me $3.95 in 1963, I wore  the main bearing  to the point it wouldn,t runwell anymore. I had asked one of my friends if he knew a way to fix this problem. This friend is Bob Zambelli, he told me how to replace the bearing. I told him that I didn,t have any machine tools to do this type of work, to which he replied send it to me. I did and it was returned in a couple of days with a new main bearing and the crankshaft polished. These are the kind of people that our sport has in it that makes it so much fun. Thankyou Bob. I need to find out if I can have the piston hardened or chromed so that the new p/c assembly that I have will last longer than they normally do with a muffler. George

Bob Oge, and Don Blackburn both do chromeing, AFAIK.  I no longer have the contact info for either one.

Tom Lay does heat treating process for McCoys (T&L).

To all - thanks for the kind words.

Paul - I WISH I had flown south!! My new home is finished and ready to settle into BUT, my home hear in PA has not sold. I have therefore put off my retirement date.

ANYHOW, back the the subject at hand: engine work - specifically, chroming.

I've heard of two methods -
Chrome the piston, grind it to size and then hone the sleeve for a custom-fit.
Chrome the sleeve, hone it to size and then custom-fit the piston.

I have not had any experience but can someone comment on a preferred method, if any?

Hi Bob,

Talking to Don Blackburn the last time, he said he chromes the piston.  I understand that Bob Oge chromes the sleeve.  From all reports, these two gentlemen's work is superb, so I don't know which is better!
