A Guy Asked If I can Do Tricks With My Plane:
« on: May 11, 2015, 03:09:38 AM »
A guy saw me getting ready to start the engine for a practice flight, and he asked if he could watch. He also asked if I could do tricks with the plane, in the air.

This guy was about ready to get an education! I told him: Circus Clowns do Tricks, Magicians do Illusions, Hollywood does Stunts, and the Military do Maneuvers. I'm a Control Line Pilot, and I perform Aerobatics! I could hardly keep a straight face, and he says, "Yeah, I get it, like them kids on tumbling mats!"

It was hard to keep from laughing, now, but I said, " they do Acrobatics, on the floor, with their bodies. I fly my Aerobatics in the air, all around this big circle."

So, five minutes later, that guy was smarter than he was when we started talking. Maybe he'll get a plane.
I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

Probably right up to the moment until he found out he would have to put out some personal effort!
I see people my age out there climbing mountains and zip lining and here I am feeling good about myself because I got my leg through my underwear without losing my balance

Actually I've heard a couple of past National Champs refer to the maneuvers a "Tricks"...I don't feel qualified to argue with them!  n1

Hookers?  Are you referring to the guys that fly Navy Carrier?  I don't think they do any "tricks", but then I have led a sheltered life.

I think it's like a few other words: we, the involved, may use them amongst ourselves, but if somebody else says them we find it improper, not to say offensive.  I used to know a C/L speed flier who referred to his models as his 'toys' - but woe betide any non-aeromodeller who called them that!

I don't think the way to get casual observers of our hobby interested in joining in is to make them feel stupid for asking a question. Poorly thought out response, Doug.

The folks I know as "hookers" crew and fly CH-47s. Now those guys know some tricks. Like how to go to a remote field site and be watching TV, have coolers full of cold beverages, all the comforts of home. Shoot, one time, in Panama, we flew in and they had a swimming pool set up!  #^

As to the OPs situation, I have to agree with Clint. We need to be open and inclusive if we want future generations to appreciate this type of flying. To me, it's a heck of a lot more fun then R/C but then I've done both. These guys now adays have no experience with it so they have no idea.
Best Regards,
Bill

Okay, this went a little farther than funny. I seriously just came up with the scenario. It didn't really happen. I just got to thinking about all the different ways people describe their flying. I'll withhold any other (what I think is funny) comments, to myself.
I will build it. It's gonna be really difficult to find me with an ARF. I know every bit of my airplane!

Fairly early in my F1A career, I was flying several times a week, at the old Boeing Space Center pasture, adjacent to the R/C strip. One evening, I was getting ready to fly and an R/C guy came over and said "What frequency ya flying?"  I said "Three or four times a week, if the wife will let me." He wandered off, scratching his head. Well, he asked! Maybe he didn't realize I was flying Free Flight? Could be, I guess.  LL~ Steve

Now, see? That's funny!
I had a similar, REAL-LIFE situation occur with my former wife: I was president of the RC club here, and wanting to take full command of my stature in office, I asked her (The First Lady) if she would make some frequency flags for us. She was delighted to help, too!
So... Over the next few weeks, I kept finding little Post-It-Notes all over the house that read: "How about tonight, Honey?"
She missed the point, but the frequency was clear!
