Title: A forum here to help support CAD users
Post by: John Miller on December 31, 2012, 07:08:03 PM
I believe the time has come for a dedicated forum to be included, here at Stunt Hangar, that will help those of us who use some kind of CAD program in our modeling pursuits.

CAD Hints, tips, and files can be included, and shared, as well as archived for future safety and use.

What brings this to mind is something that happened to me today while working on a drawing file. I wanted to insert a drawing of a Brodak .40 into position in  the front end of the Spirit of Saginaw 3. While I have a folder with all my engine files, apparently they all are currently corrupted. Unusable and for all intents and purposes, a non entity. If we had a place in this forum where these types of files can be shared and, or stored for our use, think how handy, and useful it could be.

I can imagine this has happened to others. It would be neat if we had such files stored, and backed up, waiting for us here. Handy and useful I'm sure. Especially now, as we, can post them as .DWG, or .DXF files

What say you Sparky? Finally, any one have a good drawing file showing  the Brodak .40 I could use, to start us off?

John,

Glad your feeling better.

Also glad you have your Brodak 40 file because I cannot help you with that. I don't have one.

Your CAD idea is a good one. A really good idea! Kudos!

I'm a CAD cheater. Let me explain.

I have a sign & graphics software program that we us in the industry. Similar to Illustrator but it blows Illustrator away because it has quicker features.

I designed The New American in this program. All parts were saved in a vector file and sent to a laser cutter. I also draw parts, from plans, for customers. "A vector line is a vector line" so it works well for that and anything else that requires vector line art. I can also drop in jpegs or tiffs, that can be scanned.

Once on screen I can do a line drawing trace of the scanned image. I'm sure you know this.

However, I have limitations with this program, there are things.

If I had engine side view photos or top view photos, I probably could do a line drawing over them. Then scale to the proper and exact size.

Also. Sometimes the manufacturer has great engine art or side photos that can be scanned or traced also.

So, I'm open to helping you out, if I can, with the program I currently have.

I can save files a few ways. I save them as a DXF file, for laser cutters, only after I import the file into Illustrator.

I'm Mac based.

Keep this in mind.

Thanks again for your effort to share.

Charles

P.S. I don't remember where I got this photo? Possibly on line but I think someone sent it to me. Never used it because I purchased an OS LA .46 instead.

Sparky has answered our call, and set up a CAD users forum here on Stunt Hanger. Would you like to be the first to post an engine file, with the Brodak 40?

Now Big John is in for it.   I myself love to see the cad drawings, but don't do computor drafting.   Last time I did any drafting was for a fuel tank many, many, many years ago.

I am going to do you one better. I am going to be the first to contribute with a RED HOT DWG File!

You say you figured out the mathematics to stop Brett Buck's Infinity cold, but the plane looks like crap. You finally have a classic that can shut down Bob Hunts six straight VSC wins but, you have to put a paper bag over the nose. Well, I've got  just the thing for you!

A DWG file of True Turn spinners. That's right folks-nine count-em nine true spinners, sized from 1.5" to 3.5"(for that red hot 2M ship of yours) all ready to go in ACAD 2000 format. Enjoy!

Just to make sure this new forum starts out with a bang, I am going to follow up that first post, with John's request for the Brodak B40. Now you have a motor for those nice new spinners.

I am going to hit you with post #3 because, it just makes sense. Below is the link to download the free version Draftsight. Draftsight was a pay version of Dassault 2D CAD program but, they decided to kick 2D to the curb because 3D is where the money is at. Hence, a semi pro 2D cad program based on ACAD 2000 specs for free. Draftsight is somewhat harder to setup intially then ACAD 2000 but, after that it wil smoke ACAD 2000,(hey it came much later). I say "semi-pro" because pro software is really not 2D anymore.

If someone where to come up with a 2D CAD program for model aviation-this is it. I am considering posting some lessons on initial program setup because of the aforementioned difficulty. We'll see.

The other issue is that, because this is a dedicated CAd forum, we should feel free to post CAD related material from any source i.e.,(RC, Carpentry, etc.) if it is beneficial to our needs.

THANK YOU so much about theme!

I am beginner in Autodesk Inventor after trying some free programs for 3D modelling, but very far from precision and working hard with exact dimensions :(
I will share lot of videos and tutorials, which helped me only for 3 days to model a engine Axi -2826 ; )))
