99% OT Good News!
« on: December 08, 2020, 06:40:11 AM »
Just when you thought the world could not get any crazier -  BREAK DANCING is going to be an Olympic sport!  Confirmed for the 2024 Olympics. These are the same people who have twice dumped a multi-billion dollar sport - baseball - that has literally hundreds of millions of regular fans and millions of participants at various levels.

Best of all, this in an attempt to "appeal to a younger demographic"! About 30 years *too late* on that one, it was a fad for about 6 months in the 90s.

These are the clowns with which the FAI loves to align itself. Can RC Pattern, CL Stunt,  and Wii bowling be far behind?  I wound up with some best lap times on Gran Turismo 6, sign me up, where's my medal at?

       Brett

p.s. This is the sort of thing that old white guys figure might "appeal to today's urban youth" - because they are so out of touch, and so willing to be condescending, and willing to pander. Judging panel for 2024 - Jennifer Beals, MC Hammer, and DJ Jazzy Jeff?

Howard's Break Dancing debut was at a past NATS. I don't know what year, but I heard that he can break dance while landing an Impact, so I'm already impressed.   y1 Steve

Maybe just putting on our shorts should be an Olympic event!

Olympic gold medals only have meaning to someone interested in sports.  To me, their only value is in how much gold is in the alloy.

Break dancers get up to 20 points for sewing their costume.
Then they are required to do 15 dance moves for the judges to score.
In event they go overtime or fail to complete, say...the headspin, they do not receive 25 "dance" points added at the end.

The good news is there is a classic breakdance category for dancers born before 1970.

They had a category for dancers born before 1953, but that's called ballroom dancing.

BTW, if they decided to put CL Stunt in the Olympics, I would have roughly the same reaction - it would be completely ludicrous. There are plenty of huge legitimate sports - baseball being the most obvious - that are not in the Olympics, but garbage sports like rhythmic gymnastics, artistic swimming, ice dancing, and now breakdancing are added. Ask yourself - how many people went to a "artistic swimming" meet in the last 10 years, VS, say, an amateur baseball game?    There are college baseball stadiums with capacities of 20,000 people.  That's probably more in one game (say a rivalry game or NCAA championship) than have ever watched artistic swimming from the day it was invented,  unless you were a relative of the participants.

I might watch the CL Stunt Gold Medal round, but only because I would either be in it, or know everyone in it - not because of the tremendous spectator appeal. And this is from someone who has stayed up until 3 in the morning watching curling - a sport I will never ever do, because I don't like being around ice!

If an Olympic contestant doesn't agree with the judges' ruling, can they petition the US Supreme Court to overturn the vote?

There IS precedent for that.

Ive been waiting for this topic to come up.

Back when Sydney had the Olympics I was lucky enough to go to the venue's as one of my friends was working as security. The point was, I found myself having a conversation with an official  organiser about exactly this topic!! What sports are going to make a debut.

Obvioisly I said "why not model aircraft !! " the answer is surprising..

The olympic committee are looking at sports where the sport is done physically with ones body. Having any form of artificial device performing the "sport" is where they draw the line.

From, skateboarding,  Fencing to curling, all these fringe sports, use something physically.

Look at E-sports.. thats a HUGE sport in asia, from Pro Starcraft, to pro sports games.. also not included in the Olympics. Truth of the matter is even sports like motoracing wont be included because of this same point.

Aero modelling will NEVER enter..

As much as I laughed when I first heard Breakdancing was included in 2024, there are less and less sports that you physically do without controlling SOMETHING else isnt that easy..
If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.” - Bruce Lee.
