Under classic section I am building a Bearcat

I am painting it the 1947 Blue Angels paint theme and need this nose art.Here is a picture of the real plane's nose. I can make the US Navy lettering but the nose lettering is quite difficult/ What can you all recomend.

Bill, I investigated this and I can't find any difference. What am I missing

Clint, the Blue Angels type style,, or font, is different than the type style used on the Blue Angel pattern airplane in Aviajets picture,,

What I thought Bill was saying was that the font on the Blue Angels Bearcats was different than the current font on the Blue Angels F-18's. I thought it was the same, but its not. The earlier planes DID have a slightly different font.
Agreed, Charles graphic of the current logo is not quite right either.

Ed,

You have a good photo of the F8F. Estimate the angles (sic) that that view would need to be rotated to get a view normal to the surface, then do the rotations in a graphics program. Then either cut the mask by hand or convert the image to vector and take it to the sign shop.

Derek I sent email
I have done all my own in the past some very complex but it all takes time and I am running out of it. It is a simple two color paint theme and I got the blue yesterday. I think I have yellow in my stock.
What color should I use under the yellow as I do not want to put it over the blue. White, silver,grey. Yellow is a tough color to get correct with out using a lot of it.

They build semi-scale models and want the graphics to be 100% scale. Sometimes, that's not possible. The time it takes to render the logo 100% perfect, you couldn't sell it because of the cost.
Sometimes you get it right sometimes you don't.

Charles,, that is not a semi scale airplane in your picture,, or your customers picture,, its a Blue Angel Pattern plane,, and it is actually called "Blue Angel" so of course they would not want the S on it,,

I'm interested in the answer to your question about what color you should use under the yellow, as I'll be painting an airplane soon, with yellow as the major color. I've heard to use white, grey or even silver as the base color for yellow to go over. I'll stay tuned to hear the answer to your question.

Look closely at the picture that Eddy posted and then at the one Charles posted. The fonts are totally different for the first Blue Angels and later ones.

Yeah, I discovered that. Check my post further down. The earlier planes did indeed have a slightly different font.

Hi Dan,

I would suggest that you never, never, never (did I say never?) use SILVER under yellow unless you are looking for a slightly slime green effect.

I would use a gray primer, as light gray as you can find, or white.

I spent a great deal of time getting the Yellow on Jester I to really pop. I used Brodak primer to get the substrate as flat and perfect as possible. Then I shot the whitest white dope. The Yellow I used was an acrylic Lacquer I had mixed. It was very translucent and needed some attention when applied to ensure tiger tailing was eliminated. As soon as I shot the first coat I was thoroughly pleased with the choice of whitest white. (not a colour, just no tint).

Very important that there are no blemishes visible through the white basecoat, as the yellow will not hide them.

FWIW, that's what I did.

I would wholeheartedly confirm Bruce's technique.

I used to use PPG Mixing Base White, it is the whitest acrylic lacquer I have ever found, but we can no longer get true acrylic lacquers in bulk in NC. All the semi translucent colors (yellow, red, etc., ) really popped when applied over that white. It was also so thick that 1 gallon lasted me for years!

Here's a shot of the nose that is closer to 90 degrees to the viewer. It would require some
manipulation, but it just might work for you.

I've seen each of them many times over the years. In my personal opinion, the Blue's show consistently kick ass on the T-Birds.

To answer some questions Derek is working on a set of decals set for me.
The Blue Angels team used the Bearcat from 1946 to 1949 and then went to jets the Grumman F9F-2 Panther
Some years they used Yellow on the leading edge of the wing,stab and rudder.The first 6 months of 1946 they used the Hellcat and the yellow Beatlebomb plane was a SNJ-T6. The color on the bottom of the wing U.S.NAVY was GOLDNEN COLOR not yellow

The name BLUE ANGELS was not picked by the Navy but by the pilots. The Navy wanted to call them the the" Navy Blue Lancers".
The popular color Blue and yellow lettering used in 1947-48 is what I am using.

For what it worth... My first big Bearcat was painted the Blue Angels blue color scheme and though very nice, got 14 appearance points at the NW Regionals. My flying partner, Jim Welch had another Bearcat which was painted the flip colors of "Beetle Bomb". All yellow with Blue trim. Jim got 17 appearance points with his, though it was not quite as well done. Moral to the story is that some judges do not like blue planes. Lesson learned, as my following Bearcats and Mustangs have all had red, white and blue schemes which are very bright and showey. For you, I would just recommend the "Beetle Bomb" scheme. Nothing like screaming yellow!

I think the Thunderbirds are still suffering from that horrible incident in Phoenix AZ in the 1980's when the whole team flew into the ground off the lead man.
I think it took a long time after that to get back to where they are now both politically and technologically.
I know the Air Force severly limited their performances for a long long time after that terrible accident.
They are a great gtoup of fliers just somewhat limited by what they are allowed to perform.

The Blue Angels on the other hand are certainly, in my humble opinion, the top show performers currently.

That unfortunate 4-plane crash didn't occur at Phoenix, AZ. It occurred in 1982 at Indian Springs (NV) Auxiliary AFB - since re-named Creech AFB in 2005. The T-Birds were practicing a formation loop when allegedly the lead aircraft suffered jammed elevator controls. Duty-bound to follow the leader, all four impacted the ground at high speed.

Pat It will be blue.

I put the color on two days ago and it was the worst spray job I have ever done. I took Lacquer thinner and wiped it all off the bottom and sanded the top flat as it was not as bad. I sealed it last night and painted it today. It came out flat and smooth. The color when it has the clear on it is very close to what the Blue Angels used. Plane is 99.99999999% done. It will weigh 60 ounces with a .61 rear exhaust motor in it.
