This may seem like an odd Question but I a m curious as to what colors was the the ares in 59'/

Every photo I saw of the Ares from 1959 was in Black and White, I always thought it WAS black.
Is there a modern color photo of that classic young Billy holding it with slick black hair like he just finished off telling Grease boys they weren't cool.

Thank you Bob for the update. Growing up in the mid sixty's early seventy's graduated in 77' my Dad had an Ambroid "ares" he built and painted GM lacquer Maderia Plum, and corona cream Cadillac colors.
My dad was not the greatest builder in the whole world and don't think it came close to flying the pattern. I turn 63' next month and trying to relearn how to fly after having flown an overweight Sig Akrobat covered with oracover in the early 90's a couple flightss.

I am surprised no one came up with is picture.
DID you know there was a .35 size Juno back in the early 1960's long before the .46 size one.
I do have color pictures of it in my archives.
I did post it on here years ago.

Oh boy! I was there at the Las Alimitos (SP!) NAS Nats in 1959 and watched Billy whoop all comers with that magnificently beautiful and capable stunt ship. Alas, didn't own a camera so no pix (was an also ran Senior) but fell in love with the Ares and Billy's gracefully beautiful patterns. I ended up "having" to have one of my own and was engaged in painting it at Paulson Office and Hobby Supply in Renton, WA. where I worked as a teenager when I met--and also fell in love--with Shareen. That Ares and the manner in which Billy flew it had a monster influence on my entire life. Fortuitous to say the least!

The first photo from 1959 is of course the classic one from AM that I never forgot. The second is from 1961 and is a fantastic group. The last is Bob's Model Aviation article. I didn't know that Bill was having health problems and hope that he's OK. I'd love to see him fly again.

I met Billy in the hangar at the '59 Los Alamitos Nats. He had shipped the Ares there in a large aluminum container of sorts. I had a modified Nobler and showed it to him as the trim on my wing was quite similar to his Ares. He asked me if I would pit for him as he wanted to put in a couple practice flights. Of course I agreed and got to see a couple great practice flights. I watched the Walker Cup fly off between Billy, Palmer and the Junior flyer. I can't recall the Junior's name. Bob Palmer's flight was rather a disappointment to me as he flew the 2 laps between maneuvers not even looking at his Thunderbird. The T-Bird had an aluminum landing gear with a bounce frequency accurately tuned to the model. He got about 5 landings in on final approach. Ugg! Billy's flight impressed me very much. You could see the high level of concentration on each maneuver and the level flight between maneuvers. Palmer was truly beaten. There was no doubt in anyone's mind mind as to who won.
I remember the very dark blue base color and the red in the trim but couldn't remember if the other color was white or a very pale blue. Glad that was cleared up for me too.
What an honor to have experienced all that.

Theres a gen u wine period colour shot with Bill & TWO ARES in the Sept. / Oct 2010 Stunt News , page 40 . In the jim Havel Folkjerts Speed king SK3 article . Incidently a old mag with a picture of that in 75
got me planning a ' Folkerts one day ' . 25 years later . Now theres the plan for the original . May do one for a Talka 7 cc stunt motor , perhaps .
ANYWAY , the LINK to the ARES picture 1963 .file:///C:/Users/Public.WS190310/Downloads/SN_Magazine_SEP_OCT_2010.pdf

I finally figured out how to get the 1959 ares article. The only way I could get it was to go to plans then 1959 ares get pdf, then print it from there. It was in the July 2002 MA but the online version doesn't even show it. Michael Millard
