Obviously, the bellcrank was not on the CG! Sorry, Sparky, I couldn't resist.  VD~

Seriously, whatever they had it tethered with was stupid draggy, besides being hooked to the wingtip too far forward.  H^^ Steve

Some RC guys think Control Line is a joke.  I even saw one of these where the lines "broke" and then it was revealed that there was a RC guy flying the plane the entire time.  Sick.

Yup, how can you have fun flying around in a circle? Using wires to work a poxy bellcrank and all you have to work with is elevator.

A hobby for simple people.

These are the kind of antics where someone could get injured quite easily.

It's nice to be playful and have fun, but this is stretching fun a bit.

There comes a time for seriousness in our hobby, it can be dangerous.

So , its ignorant people like this that give aeromodeling (in general) a mad name. Sure they are having agreat time and no one got hurt(this time). What happens when someone less experienced tries this after seeing it on Youtube? We all take it on the chin when they are injured. The AMA needs to put sanctions on the club(or members0 that put this video out.

Yes a few of the RC guys are idiots.   I think it was Bob Underwood a great modeler that had a design that could be flown CL or RC.  All that was done was move the pushrod from the elevator servo to the bell crank and hook up the lines.   Rudder servo was off set for CL flying.  Used the throttle for take off and landings.

The reason why I posted the vídeo is that I found it to be ridiculing what CL really is.
I totally agree with everybody who said it is irresponsible to do something like that.
Control Line is a wonderful hobby/sport and deserves to be respected.

I once had an RCer tell me that once I "stepped up" to RC I'd throw rocks at my CL models. HAHAHA Last laugh, I asked him how long he'd been in modeling to which he arrogantly replied,  "years!" I told him if he ever makes it to 50 years like me, he'll wonder what he ever thought was so great about RC.

Yup, I tried RC a year ago to get my young son involved in modeling (after trying CL). I got bored after flying for 5 minutes. D>K
My son likes it because he doesn't get dizzy. n~

It's funny to me when they think it's so easy to fly CL.  I've been trying to learn CL for three years and I'm just scratching the surface.  I don't like RC that much and like mentioned above, get bored with it after about 5 minutes. Except the ALES glider contests, but then again I bought an ARF glider and three weeks later entered a contest that I didn't get last place in.  Which one is easier?

I fly both RC and CL I enjoy both.  I tend to fly CL for competition and RC for sport.  I would agree that the video is the jackass RC pilots mocking CL.   Whenever I hear a RC pilot start dogging CL'ers I say lets see your stunt plane do a square corner 5 feet off the ground or for fun lets do an outside triangle with the point at the bottom...shuts them up real quick.

Steve, why do think this group are even AMA members?  Other than the stupidity of their laughter and actions I did find their chosen spot very well kept and to me it looked like either part of a golf course or a neat place to fly CL.

It appears they are flying at the RC aerodrome in SC.  I am not 100% sure on that.

The Audi you see in there for a second is awesome!

I found it funny. If you notice there is a guy who says "make it hover." And the guy on the radio says we have not done anything today that a control line plane cant do. He knows what they can do.

I don't think they were mocking it all.  I think they were having a blast dragging their buddy around the circle.

It is also clear from the DX18 (expensive radio) in his hand and the model on the tether and his ability to fly that large plane in such a small confined area without hitting the ground he is an experienced modeler/flyer.

If there is an incident chop the throttle and it falls to the ground. (we can't do that) If it gets loose, well ok, just fly it out do some rolls and land it. No big deal. (we can't do that either)  Where is the abnormal safety problem that can't happen with a typical CL setup?

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Most young RC guys today have no earthly idea what a control line plane is let alone feel an angst towards it.  I think this is never more evident in the welcome we have received at one of the biggest RC events in the world today, the Joe Nall...

How would RCers be received if they wanted to combine RC into a CL event.....??

We as aeromodellers have enough adversity to deal with without someone trying to duplicate what was seen in the video and getting someone hurt. As far as why I think they are AMA members, look at the radio and airplane. This is not the equipment some novice would buy. Also the flyer is very knowledgeable in the capabilities of his equipment, although careless for letting it be posted on the web.

Steve

That can go for anything.  Even posted videos of an engine running on a test stand and the person needles it up and down.  Someone could try to copy that hurt themselves very badly.

There comes a point where people are responsible for their own actions.  Example: If a person sees someone on TV jump their car over a barn, Dukes of Hazard, then they go try it and get hurt.  That's not the TV shows fault.  It's their fault for not being to bright.

I'm with Doug on this one.  I don't see what all the fuss is about. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  Unsafe?  Maybe.  They did put the "don't try this at home" disclaimer at the beginning of the video and they had control of the throttle.  They seemed to know what they were getting into.  Besides, they had flown RC for 5 minutes got bored and needed something more challenging.

I agree with Doug about people being responsible for their own actions, but some parents with hurt children don't care about disclaimers. Granted the same parents let their children play sports where they get hurt also. I think back to some of the videos showing 3D stuff where someone was hurt. We as a group(AMA) should not condone some of the mindless stunts. Yeah I know about the safety code.

I have absolutely zero problem with R/C guys. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't have fuel and other supplies. The guy I get my fuel from is on his way over here right now with a 25' roll of monokote for me, he lives 45 miles away. The only problem, and the main; that I don't fly R/C as opposed to C/L? Easy, the R/C planes get so far away I can't see them anymore! LL~ LL~ LL~

Funny you say that John. My friends at the RC field always poke fun at me for flying my gliders so close.  They tell me to get longer lines for my gliders. LL~
