I am working on a foam wing and I used the 3M 77 spray on glue. Boy that is some hi dollar stuff.
Anyway I missed a little spot on the end of the LE sheeting. I sprayed a little on some news paper and took a razor and wiped it under the wood. I got a little on my finger tip and did not think anything about it. After I got the tape on the sheeting and put the wing away I went to wipe my finger off. As I picked at the glue I saw some pink new skin. Seems it peeled my top layer of skin off my finger tip.

I did not know that would happen.

In other words your skin and wallet got the same treatment. Ah, Lifes little lessons. Aren't they fun. As long as the wing liked it it should be ok. I used this stuff at work to put labels on boxes. when I finished had to use paint remover to get it off my hands. IT HOLDS!

No, you mean it exfoliated dead skin cells, exposing the new living skin underneath. Properly packaged and marketed, this could be a fortune builder for someone

I would hope the only true lesson learned here is to thoroughly read the label? It states and I quote:

DANGER! EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR, MAY CAUSE FLASH FIRE. CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE, MAY CAUSE EYE AND SKIN IRRITATION, VAPOR OVEREXPOSURE MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRATATION AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSION.

Skin being removed from your body is about as big an IRRITATION as it gets.

I heard it would dissolve the foam but I did not know it would dissolve skin.

So far so good with the foam wing. I now have to put in the bell crank and join the two halves. That will be the tricky part.

I am surprised that it didn't dissolve the foam as it contains acetone. 3M makes a specific contact adhesive to glue wood to foam.

I resisted the urge to say "use whatever works , it is no skin off my finger". I was afraid it would be construed as a smart a$$ remark.

I would take some pictures, but I am not sure you can tell where the skin came off.

FWIW, the 3M 77 spray glue in the black cans that they sell in the craft section of most hardware stores and discount stores, isn't very resistent to heat or age. I used it on a couple wings and the sheeting didn't stay stuck. Granted some of them are many (10+) years old, but still I wouldn't recommend it. The skins were stuck down at first, but after hanging in the shop they delaminated. The Super 77 is listed as a multi-purpose adhesive. 3M lists at least 10 other spray glue formulas on their website, along with a surface guide for choosing the right glue. There are also a few more formulations under the automotive section. There is probably a better choice available that would be better suited to the task.

Super 77 is used to attach cloth material to auto headliners( foam board). Have done it several times and was recommended by a professional auto interior man. When its set, its done. Never did a wing with it(yet) though...Also used it for mounting large photos to foam board in an vaccum press.Paul, did you vaccum bag the wing?

No I did not vaccum bag the wing. Should I have?

I just wrapped it up with blue tape, but them back in the craddle and let them sit over night.

It seems to look OK, but what do I know.

This is going on a Profile plane, so all I need is straight, not front row.

Super 77 is half way down in the list, the specification that I'd like to point out is the temp resistence. It says it'll tolerate a maximum of 110*. It might not be important if you store your planes in a climate controlled room, but ours usually hang in the garage, and also spend time at contests inside cars.

I'm not trying to start an argument, just trying to make a helpful suggestion to save someone else the pain of a Magnum with skins that aren't stuck down.

For automotive applications I used stuff called Trim Tack, great stuff. Just done expect it to work on the shiny side of vinyl.

I guess I just dont know what Im talking about.The headliners still up after 6+ years of Texas heat though.

I'll have to remember to not use it if it ever falls down again...

Should work just fine Paul, vaccum bagging just gives it more evenly applied pressure when bonding with the glue.epoxy is probably the adhesive of choice when bagging, however.

I know this stuff is hard on respitory system. because I used it a lot at Work. Hated It but does work for wing skins. It is a health hazzard!

I have two 15 and 20 year old stunters that have the skins glued on with 3m 77 in the black cans. They have stayed stuck all this time.

I heard that the formula is different now, and I go with epoxy.

I don't think vacuum bagging skins that are set with contact cement is going to matter!

Hey Guys,
I was desperate and oin a hurry once and tried a product by Duro that is basically a clone of the 77, but several bucks cheaper per can and it woerks quite well! It's called All-Purpose Spray Adhesive, comes in blue & white can and did a fine job on the foam to balsa application.
I used it on my # 2 Crosswind, which I have competed with for three full seasons now and the plane is still the best I've ever flown. It's spent time in the van in the heat. puts up with my crazy flying on my PA65 and get this, all that with a Monocote covering.

But Jerry it does't matter because your wife knows how to destroy your wings the easy way,but I will say 77 did the job. those broken wings still have the balsa on them

Good Joke No skin off my fingers. Good thing he didn't spray it any place else so we could say this joke a littlle different. Like. I sprayed my Hair. wow that hurts.

If I am reading this right, it sounds as if the 3M 77 was not fully dry before mating the surfaces. The can I had was used to attach wax paper to a set of plans. On the can it stated for temporay use, mate surfaces before 3M 77 dries. For permanent bond let both surfaces dry completely. Then be very careful before mating as you will not be able to readjust after they are mated. Had to cut new core as I was not careful enough. Have fun, DOC Holliday
