Oldest hobby store in activity
« on: November 06, 2016, 04:06:47 PM »
i am researching for the oldest Hobby Store still open these days
here in Brazil we have "casa aerobras" open in 1943 and still in activity!
kind of a time-capsule, the first time i´ve entered there 30 years ago, the guy that sold my first c/l model is still there doing the same job!
been there with him yesterday when he was awarded a plaque with aknowledgement for his efforts into our hobby.
are there any oldest store still open in USA or other country that you´re aware of?

The oldest hobby shop I know of, is J&M Hobbies in San Carlos California.
I remember going there in the mid sixties with my father.
I was there just Friday afternoon. Cliff still caters to the control line group and I try to purchase what ever I need from him to support his efforts.
I'll ask him tomorrow, how long they have been in business.
I do know his father ran the shop long before Cliff took it over.

This is an interesting question! I would bet it's in Southern California some where, but I guess you never know. Here in the St. Louis area, it would be Schaefer's Hobby. I think it's on it's third generation. Some of you old timers out there that have been to town through the years and visited the shop on Virginia Ave. in south St. Louis know of that location. It was in what we call the "scrubby Dutch" neighborhood of town back in the day. My Mom was raised in that neighborhood. She said that she used to go to Schaefer's as a teen age girl to get sewing and bead craft stuff, before it was in the location at Virginia Ave. and Meramac St. I think she said the Art Sr's dad started it out of their basement in a four family flat south of corner location that some of you may remember. My Mom was 87 when she passed away in 2013, so that may give you some idea. I remember their add in the Yellow Pages that mentioned, at  the time years ago, 60 some odd years in business. Art Jr. runs the store now near Gravois Rd. and Lindbergh Blvd., not far from Buder Park. Might not be the oldest in the country but it has been around a while! If you have ever been in the old shop, you will be pleased to know that they still have some of the old control line models that used to hang in there on the wall at the newer location. Planes like Kostecky's Formula S, one of the original Tucker Specials, and numerous other speed models and such, along side a Yellow Jackets club shirt!
     Type at you later,

Gotcha all beat!  Eugene Toy & Hobby (in Eugene, of course) was established in 1933.  It is the same age as I am.  We will both make it to 100 or better.

I know they don't win on age, but I like Hobbies Unlimited in Portland.  I stop there after each flying session at Delta Park.  Sign on the door says they've been in the same location for over 70 years.  But, I've only lived here for 21 years so I have to take their word for it.

i am reasearching to apply Casa Aerobras to the Ginnes book, as they opened in 1943 and are still open.
Eugene started not as a hobby store, or am i mistaken? when they started to carry hobby products for good?
