In the building section I started this airplane and I am rubbing it out now.

Still needs trim on the wheel pants but as it sits 54.5 ounces.

Well I couldn't build this in 30 days with a Windy finish, but do you know the difference between this and a Windy finish?

About a pound.

I bought a Roku 3 so I could watch Youtube on my TV. I hear mention of a 7 ounce finish in the windy tapes. Makes me wonder where he is measuring from? This is a 6.5 ounce finish and I have no paint on it.

Yes dope does lose weight as it dries/cures, depends on how you look at it.  The plane looks absolutely great Sparky.   I do good to get one ready for paint in 30 days.

Well Sparky,
You are the other side of the coin to my building activity.  I'm putting clear dop (not the top coat) on one that I just covered today that i started 2 1/2 years ago.  I have 4 others that are ready to cover that I started up to 8 years ago.  Someone told me that I'm actually a very fast builder compared to Howard...don't know if that's true or not, but it usually takes me about 3 years from start to finish.

30 days?  Ridiculous!  It looks great.  Very nice classic lines.  I really like that!

Thanks for the compliment.

But the reason some people take so long is too much time wasted on writing spread sheets on what color is best or how many rat droppings work best on a wing.

That's pretty funny Robert.  At the rate you build, you don't need spread sheets.  Just build it, fly it, and see if it works.  If not, build another one and try again.  I like that approach!  Beautiful work, as always.

Well I have 1 flight on it and its a new plane design. I thought it would be better to stay around a familiar design and work it in between and test as I do. It will need to evolve I am sure so its the first in the series. As a mater of fact I am always trying to improve my Viper design I will probably make another before the NATS and fly the one that flies best.

Robert,

You set an excellent example. Thank you for that.

I'm tearing The New American apart.  Less weight and a new look for my very first electric.

I have a few "fine tuning" questions that will help me get going immediately.

The spinner you used and size?

Clockwise rotation?

Collet choice and thread size?

CF gear and pants from what supplier.

Robert, that's if for now,

Thanks in advance.

Randy, Randy, Randy we need to get with the times.   I use a hearing device now and it is because of all the noises I encountered during my life time.   Nothing like working in industrial plants, like injection molding machines, corrugating machine and printing presses.   No ear muffs.  Also drag racing in street  stock.   But, they tell me  it was the  model engines that did my ears in.  I keep thinking about the ease of electric, you know,  not worrying about what nitro content,  what plug and if the ni-starter is charged.   Electric is plug and play if you have enough batteries charged and the right props.   Well enough of this.

Robert, I hope that gorgeous plane gets you into the top 10 this year.

Charles;

A little judicious time spent reading this thread and its predecessor "I've been slacking so I started this" would answer the majority of your questions.

Prop rotation can be easily determined by looking at the photos Robert provided.

In his build thread he said the motor is a Cobra 3515/18.  Quick search of the internet provides the following URL which details the motor and the prop adapter.  http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/product_info.php?products_id=847&osCsid=08bff71a9b92732f34534ef239ed65e4

Not five (!) posts prior to your Robert answered the same question.  His carbon gear was sourced from Windy.

Robert,

Thanks for that.

I'm going to first try collets with grub screws.

Please, the spinner size and from who did it come from?

Thanks

Its not a spinner in the sense that you are asking. If you would look at it you would notice the hole through it for tightening.I think they are called a prop hub nut or something to that effect.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply.

The photo that Sparky Posted shows a collet with a prop hub. I actually have a few of these purchased only for the collet.

Sparky's model has a great spinner with a rounded tip, looks rounded, my guess is 2" or 2.25" in diameter.

His model with this spinner can be seen ten or twelve Posts back.

Any spinner will work with that collet you need a 1/4 28 spinner adapter. Mine is a 2 inch Randy Smith spinner. ANY spinner will work.

Hi Charles,

As far as I know,  Windy has "retired" from model airplanes and his model airplane business.  The last time I talked with him, that is the impression I got.  Others have said the same.

Bill,

I need gear. Robert's is nice. Probably costly, but nice.

Possibly Windy has stuff he'll part with, like gear. Ya never know.

Windy made stuff to order. He's not making any parts (props, gear, tanks) anymore.

When I got my set from Windy, the gear was $40.

Matt,

I've watched some of Windy's videos, my guess is the workmanship was excellent.
