Title: 3 bladed prop balancing
Post by: Vincent Judd on May 03, 2018, 05:47:28 AM
New territory for me.  Can someone please explain the proper way to balance a 3 bladed CF prop?

Thanks

I don't know if you can search Windy's videos on utube, but I know that he did a good one.
And my friend Pete pointed out that step one is to make sure all blades are equal length (two blades as well).

Good luck

Should have thought to check YouTube first.  There are a ton of videos on there.

Thanks Peabody.

Remove material from the blade that's hanging down the most.  Repeat as necessary.  What am I missing?

I could be wrong, but where a 2 blade needs to be balanced both spanwise and crosswise by grinding/sanding on the side of the hub to get the balance in both axis, the 3+ blades seems to mean that you don't have to do that. The extra blades also seem to run smoother...perhaps because they are better balanced or just easier to balance? Anyway, don't freak out and just be patient!  y1 Steve

If two blades are hanging down equally try to remove equal amounts from each. Also, in case you didn't know, it doesn't matter how manly you are CF dust will give you lung cancer. Once it goes in it never comes out so protect yourself first time every time.

I knew that MM, but thanks for the thoughtful tip.

When sanding the blades, it's the front, not the back, correct?

Sounds like about as much fun as wrapping leadouts, which I hate.  It's like wrestling with a pig in mud, only the pig likes it.

An alternate approach is to quick swipe some medium Ca across the  lighter blade(s).
