2nd attempt at foam wing - Pics
« on: July 10, 2008, 05:09:33 PM »
OK, I could not wait.... I had to give this another shot.
I think this came out better. I think I might be cutting too slow because of all the lines in the wing. I am cutting at 15amps.

Any way this wing is for a Scrapper and it is thin. There4 I do not think I will core it out. Not much of a need for such a small wing. 35 inches long.
I will waller out a hole for the bell crank and lead outs and that is it.

Now should I sheet the LE & TE with cap strips in the middle?
or
Just wrap the whole thing in Ekote?

On such a small wing I wouldn't do anything but wrap it in a plastic covering. Just remember to be careful with the iron.
I have good luck doing this. Here's one of my Wareagles

Rick,
Did you put on a balsa LE and TE?

Rick,

I used a combat wing approach :)
On this design I didn't use balsa on the leading or trailing edge I did use a center rib and drywall reinforcing tape. This wing lasted several hundred flights and more than two or three straight in crashes by my youngest and at least one by me the day before the triathlon.
The wing was also glued into the fuse with silicone adhesive which I'd almost bet helped on the nose ins. I also put tape along the trailing edge and covered the whole wing with monokote except for the rustoleum on the lite ply wing tips.

Paul,
Here's a photo of my leadout. It's actually a Brodak adjustable leadout with some scrap plywood frame that I made and screwed to the plywood wingtip. Never had a problem with it. The belcrank mount is a single piece of brass that I bent around the fuse and double over about an inch at the belcrank and secured to the fuse with a 4-40 bolt and nut. The Belcrank mount is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch above the wing. I believe the landing gear and wheels help offset this as far as the vertical CG goes. This isn't suppose to be a highly competitive stunt ship. It's orginal purpose was to be a durable platform trainer for an OS .15. It worked well and actually did most of the pattern. It has turned out to be a pretty good Triathlon plane after modifying the front end to take an LA 25

First of all, the cut looks very good.  But 15 amps? did you measure it or was that the setting on the battery charger?  wow that sounds very high by about 2x.  I think 15 amps would melt the wire.  That may be why it is a little wavy.

I'd cut some spar nothces top and bottom, join it with a playwood stub spar and cover it with lamination film.  You can get it at kinkos or I'll give you a few feet when you are up here.

Howdy Dave,
Yes this is a setting on the batter charger. I have a 6,15,and 100 amp setting. I think the six would not be enough. This 15 seems to cut it like hot butter. The wire will only turn red if I get the connectors about 4 inches apart.

I am debating on if I will put the controls inside or on top of the wing like Rick shows. The sheetrock tap and spar is a go.
See ya in a few weeks.

Paul,
Make sure you paint the drywall tape with white glue and let dry before covering.
If you've got the second or third issue of CLW I outlined the process in an article on building Jim Carpenter's Yankee Nipper.
Take some photo's when you're done...good luck
