Glow Plug for COX .049 Head
« on: February 22, 2022, 05:01:35 PM »
I have come by some COX engines that have a head adapter with a glow plug that replaces the standard COX head.  I have some Thunderbolt RC long plugs.  Will that fit and work or what do I need to buy something else for plugs for those engines.

Thank you
Mike

You'll need to pull the adapter to see if you want a long or short plug.
Generally there is a power loss with these units. If you're not flying speed or duration Free Flight you won't notice the power loss.

Hi Dan,

I am just flying for fun Dan and just getting back into free flight.  Does the adapter accept a long or short plug or just a short one?

Thank you
Mike

SWeveral adapters are out there. I've never used one. ZPull the head and screw in a plug. You want the plug to be relatively flush to the top of the combustion chamber.

Mike, Mecoa made a long and short adapter. The red anodized one was for long and the purple was for shorts. There was also Charlie's adapters that appeared to look like a modified burnt out Cox plug which was mill finish and really no flats to tighten it up. They used long plugs. For the most part if the long plug is protruding too far into the combustion chamber, it's incorrect. The above adapters rob rpm's considerably and I've tried to use them only to relinquish them to the shelf. The adapters you would want would be a Nelson adapter or a Turbo plug adapter which is available through the Kamtechnik link I posted and some have already mentioned it.

If they can be sourced, Merlin made a 4 part kit for 1/2A. The package came with 3 head buttons and a clamp ring. This setup required many head gaskets as it really bumped up the compression which can cause issues if not adjusted. The Nelson and Turbo head can and will do the same so you certainly will require head gaskets. Head gaskets are available through many and the problem is that none are the same in terms of thickness. You could possibly require 8 vs 4 due to the thickness.

Nope.  Bob Mattes only has adapters listed for .09’s and .15’s and he has dropped the .020 dangit!

I have one head (.049) that was drilled out and tapped for a short glow plug. It works fine, I'm just a sport flier.
