Once again we are about to make our way to Muncie for the Great Shootout on the L Pad. Be aware early entry closes this Wednesday so if you are going and aren't signed up, save $50 and help the planning go better by getting R done! AMA determines what share of the costs they will cover based on these early entries so keep that in mind also. On line sign up seems to work pretty well.
Reports from the site at present are that the grass fields are as wet and soggy as a couple years ago and if we were to fly this week we'd have to do it all on the L Pad again ( Beginner , Int, Old Time, Classic). We still have a couple weeks to go so maybe they will dry out. At this point I do not know how soon we will be able to access the L Pad for practice. Free Flight will be the flown the week prior and I'm not sure the situation on the RC site. We will provide updates from the site starting on the 5th.
Remember NOT to drink the water. I believe the closed grocery stores were sold and now re-opened under new names. (hooray!) The closing weekend will be the 'Iron Man" thing again so beware the run on the motels. Other than that get that last coat of dope on the machine and get rolling.........

An update:
Good buddy Joe Bowman was kind enough to point out an error on my part about the FF Nats being the week before we arrive. Well I’m sort of half wrong. Actually the FF Nats IS later but there is a local FF contest going on there the 30th and 1st.
The judges meeting has been moved from Tuesday to Monday at 5:00 pm in the HQ board room, following our get together at the 180 building. The PAMPA meeting remains on Wednesday at 5:00 for the Executive Counsel and 6:00 for the Open Membership- please attend.
The food vendor has been acquired but unlike the past it will not be the scouts. This vendor will actually be set up over on Site 3 where the RC pylon will be going on and will have a roving cart coming over to the horseshoe.
Lastly we have been cleared to use the LPad for practice the whole week and weekend before our event starts. If you want to come early for better weather than home or whatever then just come. BTW. There is a heat wave building there for the next 4-5 days so maybe that grass will dry out.
Dave
-
What is a heat wave in Indiana? We have been in triple digits for two weeks.
Derek
Thanks for the updates Dave!
-
Well for us southern northerners it’s 95-100. It’s starting here today in KC and heading east. Unfortunately it’s bringing the wind with it. I may head to Muncie REAL early next week to fly if it keeps up. Anymore heat than that you can keep down there Derek.

We are getting a fair amount of wind right now too. Very severe thunderstorms in the evenings with 40-60 mph wind and hail. Can't wait to see beautiful Muncie, Indiana.

I had to put a sweater on to go flying this morning!

Doesn't the old Acura have remote start and heated seats? Might want to use the new one on nippy days! D>K Steve

I haven’t heard anything Derek but I’ll be leaving for Muncie at first light in the morning and will report from there about dinner time tomorrow.

Thanks Dave,
I assumed you were already there on gallon 3 by now. LL~
Derek

Well not yet but there are 11 gallons in the car.........5,10,and 15. Have to make up for the 5 gallons I DIDN'T get to burn this week. Good thing though- went to the hobby shop...the fuel shelves were empty! Would have been in trouble. You gettin' any stinkin' practice?

I put in a couple practice flights this year. 😉
Derek

Well I'm glad you aren't overdoing it.
Dave

Hey you guys have a safe trip and watch out for those that drive like I do. LL~ LL~ I wait for the reports. Also Dave I got the Hobo up today. Nothing like a lean needle setting. Third flight finally I got a half way decent flight. H^^ Oh, the cement blocks work too for me. Is 5 foot square big enough? ???
-
Doc it was OK for me-will be better when they settle into the sand a little so they don't rock and you don't feel like you are stepping off a cliff when you wander around. It IS a positive addition. We could put another layer around the outside. Take care of the circle till I get back!

The grass is dry (except for the typical pop up shower now happening), freshly mowed and ready for me to anoint with oil in the morning.
-
On the stick! The NFFS trailer is already in position.
-
Looking across 2 and 3- beans by 1&2, corn by 3 and 4. Could be interesting should the wind come from there.
-
You are the one that said I was driving!
I actually asked if you "should" be driving... A simple "no" would have been sufficient, but we can battle it out next week. Have a safe trip either way.
Derek

I'm very jealous Dave. Fireworks on the L-pad tommorow?

My smiley faces were for the word "battle". Following your "should" and "no" comments, I thought you wanted to battle over the correct word to be used!!!
Might see you next week!

Yes, tears of sadness for you!

I am actually coming to give an airplane away.
Not long ago I was looking at my stable of planes and wondered what would happen to them when I was gone. I suspect most of them would go to waste. So I decided to give some away.
About two years ago I gave two away at a local competition here. One is being used as intended and the other is hanging on a wall. Then I gave another one away last year, and it is also being used as intended.
There was another I thought could be used by someone much farther east. I can't wait to turn it over to its new owner, as that person knows nothing about this. It has been coordinated with one of their family members, and am assured it will be appreciated.
So, that is what is in my car!

Okay, that's pretty damn funny. It will be a little more funny when the scores are posted. I hear your protege is sneaking up on you. You starting to slip in your golden years?

All kidding aside, that is awesome Paul!! I can't even imagine owning one of your planes, that would be a true honor.
Derek

Hate to barge in but one public service announcement: For those coming from the west on I70...a warning. A stretch of the road about a half mile long starting right in front of Lucas Stadium is so bad with ruts and potholes that the 65 mph traffic slams on the brakes and goes through there about 15 mph (serious) trying not to tear their car up. It is prime for rear-enders. When you get past the airport start driving VERY DEFENSIVELY.

You didn't take the by pass going North of the congestion?

Thanks for the report on the grass Dave. I HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY SO ALL THE NON-SANCTIONED EVENTS WILL BE ABLE TO BE COMPLETED OVER THERE.

Doc I do what Ma Bell GPS tells me to....

Doug for what I saw right now the grass is in great shape though I didn't go over towards the combat area. I was surprised they had it mowed already. I'm sure they will have to mow again by the weekend. It's all roped off, Johnie on the Spots are there, and tents are ready. The Scale/Racing area is ready to go.
This morning I shall make those cinder blocks to get into the tabulation trailer history.
Dave
-
Thanks again Dave! It will definitely need mowing again if they are getting rain a few times a week which they have been. They're trying to stay ahead of the showers cause they can't mow when its too wet.

The new build is done. We’ll test fly it this week. I call it “Ozark Stairway to Heaven “. A coat of urethane will do it.

Randy you might see if NASA can help you. Being the bearer of bad news, our iconic Dairy Queen is shuttered-out of business. Had to settle for a shake at Mickey D's....

Great idea Howard!

What!!! No Dairy Queen, How are you guys/gals going to survive? ???

Other than being hot the weather has been nearly perfect yesterday and this morning. However a storm rolled in around 1:00 pm and more on the way. Tomorrow's forecast is for quite heavy wind all day so may be grounded here. So far it's just been Richard Speer (Corpus Christi) and myself with one other flier I did not recognize at a distance putting a few flights on the LPad. Richard was coming to Oz (Kansas) to work with me there prior to the Nats but with the wind there the plans changed to meet up here early. Might do the tour of the museum tomorrow with walk-through photos like a few years ago if anyone is interested...
That last weekend is booked solid at all the hotels in Muncie. The going rate as far out as Anderson and Centerville can go over $260.00 per night. You'd have to go nearly back to Indy to find more normal rates.

Methinks I should stop helping you.
Then the order you posted above should hold.
Except Chris might move up a notch or two. He’s been awesome lately.

We didn't get any flying in yesterday since the wind was not cooperating-could be flown in if you had to but little to no practice value. Today most will start arriving. Windfinder tells me we will get some flying very early but then the wind comes up to 13-14 mph until around 7 pm. Late evening will be good...and busy. Scale will be going today. The wind will be challenging for them.
Dave
-
Well, we have had one tire go bad in North GA, and a second in Louisville.
Derek
-
Sorry to hear but glad you can still talk about it! Be safe. It’s pretty windy so not much flying today after the morning practice. I met and flew with Kestus Dvarvydis this morning. Watch out for this guy. Paul and Chris were still fighting it when the rest threw in the towel. Maybe before dark.
Dave
-
Just looking at weather; at 8 pm to be 8 mph with gusts to 14.......Looks like stunt heaven Sunday and Monday 4-6 all day. Rick Huff was measuring 13-18 on the pad a couple hours ago.

Dave:
What is that yellow bi-plane in reply #76? Wouldn't that be great for modifying a Bi-Slob into?
-
Scott that is a tiny 1/2A entered in scale. I don’t know what is was but there must be a full scale ship like it. CUTE as a bug! Yes it would make a neat Bi Slob conversion. I didn’t get over there today but it will go again tomorrow in much better air. They did fly some though. There was a little guy, couldn’t be over 5 yrs old who did an outstanding job and kept his ship in the air. That metal Eurcoupe (sp) flew very smoothly in the breeze.
Dave
-
Got to be a Der Jager
-
Yep! I did a quick google search and it looks to be a favorite build of the RC crowd. I can see why - it really looks good! Flying Models has plans available and Outerzone has 3 different ones. None of them BiSlob size (or 1/2A size for that matter...)
-
Samantha Hines came for a couple days to practice en route to France. The team travels Monday.
-
Dave,
Thanks for the reporting and the photos. Glad you met Kestas Dvardydis. This is his first US Nats I believe. He is a good guy and lives in Los Angeles, Calif. Hope you can share some photos of his incredible stunter.

Now that is strange because Sandy has not said a word about you giving me a plane. That`s great Paul, You can even stay at the no tell hotel here in Layton.
