2018 Carolina Classic Contest write-up & Results
By: Howard Shenton
Combat Event Director & MCLS Information Officer

The Metrolina Control Line Society fall Carolina Criterium contest was held on May 4th-6th, 2018  at the Huntersville, NC Waymer flying field. The weather was great for control line flying. The contest director was Will Davis.
Our contests are possibly the largest single weekend control line contests east of the Mississippi as it has three major Controline events flown in the same weekend. If you want to be at a control line contest, this is the one to attend. The competition includes some of the best flyers in the US with National winners and World Championships  winners and team members participating. We had 60 to 80 competitors, helpers, family and friends from 10 states.

Friday started out with test flying, judges clinic  and 1/2A combat. We had 3 new judges (Roger Alyizwer, Rusty Knowlton and Don Jeenkins) in training observing the primary judges in Profile Stunt, Old time Stunt and Nostalgia 30. Roger & Rusty judged Basic Flight.
Saturday was a busy with Navy Carrier - Class I&II, 15, Profile & Nostalgia. Combat - Speed Limit. Stunt - Old Time Stunt, Nostalgia 30, Profile  and Basic Flight.
Lunch was submarine sandwiches from the local Mama's Italian Deli.
After Saturday's events were completed most people retired to their Motel rooms for a shower in preparation for dinner at local restaurants and then back to the Super 8 Motel for the traditional homemade ice cream social and general discussions.
Sunday was devoted to the PAMPA, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert events with the awards presentations immediately after flying is finished .
.
A special thanks to all the administrative, judges and support people who make it possible for the rest of us to compete and enjoy our sport. Several of these individuals attend this event just to help out. Some  the people that stand out are James "Duck" Duckworth whose tireless efforts in registering, tabulating and trying to answer questions kept things moving. Doug Taffinder who has judged for 7 or 8 years. Dave Wenzel  drives up here from Savanna, GA for the past 6 years just to judge stunt. David Smith and Max Flowe mow the fields to our requirements after the county mowing. David also built the carrier deck. There are others who contribute by judging events, running score sheets from the judges to the tabulators, providing food, preparing contest paperwork and helping in launching aircraft. To many to list but their efforts contribute to make our contest a social and competitive success and the reason why so people come back year after year.

The Final results

STUNT
Basic Flight  flown by two youngsters, Wesley Smith and Lqim Barry, with help from their parents.
Profile Stunt, with 11 entries, had the most entries with Mike Waldron finishing well ahead of the field as he did at the October contest. Don Jenkins had the most consistent 2 flights with only a .5 increase from his first flight.
Old Time Stunt had 7 entries with Charles Reeves finishing only 1 pt. ahead of  Tommy Luper field.  Those two had the most consistent  first and second Flite scores. With I point for Charles and 2 points for Tommy.
Nostalgia Stunt, with 10 entries, had the second most entries with Derek Barry flying an Thunderbird fox 35 combo finishing ahead of Steve Fitton.
PAMPA Beginner had two of the same faces from October with Max Flowe winning in his first contest over Sam Londke. Max has been coached by Ed Ruane and Don Jenkins and it showed.
PAMPA Intermediate with 2 entries was won by Carl Lindler.
PAMPA Advanced with 9 entries had Bernie Suhamski in first.
PAMPA Expert had 7 entries with Mike Waldron leading this illustrious field. This is his second year in Expert and is continuing to make his presence felt much to the relief of the Advanced flyers.

CARRIER

Not much info on the carrier front other than the finish order for each event. The Carrier pits seemed to have 15 to 20 aircraft waiting to fly. The Shoemakers dominated most of the events except for Bernie Suhamski's win in Nostalgia.Their were 7 flyers competing.  Alan Buck joined this group. They all seemed to be having a good time.

COMBAT
1/2A Combat was flown as a double elimination event, with 4 entries. A bit breezy but flyable with cuts, kills and mid airs which is usual in an elimination event. Ron's only loss was to Mike's kill in the 3rd round which he avenged later to place 1st. Mike and Bobby flew off for 2nd with Bobby wining on air time in a 1 cut each match. Robert's first attempt with 1/2a was a learning experience with new models and much foster response times. Bobby, Roberts son, rejoined us after a few years layoff. Good to see him. Very aggressive and has not lost skills.
Speed Limit Combat, with 8 entries, was flown using the East Coast Rules (Roy Glenn's) of four rounds of cumulative scouring with a bonus of 200pts for a clean match (no mid-air or line tangle resulting in one or both aircraft hitting the ground . I have added another bonus of 100pts for winning the match. Limit of only 3 total cuts with a string cut counting as 1 cut. Airtime of 1 point for each second of airtime. Many people do not like the rounds format as this takes a less aggressive approach to flying which is difficult to adjust to but it provides more matches per person which is the primary reason for these rules. It does keep the carnage down. We flew 16 matches and had only 4 non clean. Sam, Mike & Phil had the only all clean match totals.
The KID finished first. Sam, Mike's 9 year old son, showed us how it's done with steady flying staying out if trouble and taking cuts (8) when available. He had the most airtime losing only 34 seconds of the 1200 possible seconds of airtime.  He also had all clean matches. He got cuts against everyone he flew against except Bobby who could not get his engine started. A fate in store for many of the rest of you in the future as Sam is a good flyer with good equipment and an excellent teacher and pit crew. He is gaining more experience which will help him when flying against more people with different skills.
Ron had all 4 wins but lost points with the midair with Bobby in a wild match of attack and evade. Bobby is a good  and aggressive flyer which is a disadvantage in the rounds format. As with his father, Robert, the lack of practice with their equipment which limits their ability to get everything sorted out.
A lot of good and bad flying but everyone had fun.
There did not seem to be any interest in our normal after event dinner at Outback's so we all went our separate ways.
Look forward to seeing everyone in October.
