Title: 2017 Nats Coverage
Post by: Dave_Trible on July 11, 2017, 09:51:36 AM
....will be here.

I should get to the Baymont at dinner time Thursday and take up residence on the grass circles Friday AM.  I'm not seeing any schedule conflicts with using the LPad right away but we'll see once I arrive.

Safe travels everyone!

Dave

I'm hoping the early bird catches the worm Paul.  I'd go earlier because we are having a three day 'wind event' here,  but it looks like it's rain in Muncie until like Thursday afternoon.  Bringing eight gallons of fuel- hope I don't run out!

I can't wait to see everyone, and put this new dog up in some Muncie air. It's pretty good in our 100 degree, 95% humidity air down here.

From the LPad looks good here.  Couple RTF R/C types flying.  Going down to see what the grass looks like.  As I was getting off on the Muncie exit saw a lot of water where it shouldn't be.  Doesn't seem soggy around the pad tho.

Grass circles are dry and ready to go.  Spitting a little rain here now .  Shouldn't amount to much.

Doc I'm not sure I was ever that young... don't remember it.  Keep the home field in order.  Getting a little gusty so a good time for a break before evening practice.  I've seen Mike McHenry,  the Smith bros and Samuel. (Smith Inc.). Got over to the combat area and checked up on home bros Andy and Cary Minor.

Shug you really do have to do this sometime.  Like I tell my son in law Kevin,  you do it once and you likely won't miss another one.  He too has a job that's hard to get away from in the summer-don't let it take your life from you!

Evening practice is looking in doubt.  Right now the wind is 14 gusting to 22.  The forecast still shows it 10 gusting to 15 at 8 PM.  That leaves one thing to do- the DQ.  Will still go back to the field later in case and to see if there is a bull session going on at the pagoda.

Sometimes it's a cost/ benefit analysis for me Paul.  Grit teeth and white knuckles aren't much fun.  Like I'm telling you .........  I know the airplane is more willing than I am.  This is the airplane that flew its final round flight through the thunderstorm in 2014 here.  Nonetheless I don't make practice of flying in such weather if I have a choice.  BTW..  aren't you on the way yet?

I don't like the idea of doing wingovers or overhead 8's with lightning around me.

No and you shouldn't.  Normally the flying would have been stopped but in that case this cell formed up right near us after I already took off.  Mine was the very last flight of the day.  Everyone ran for cover except me and the stalwart judges who became drowned rats in short order.  I am back out at the field in case the wind let up before dark- it hasn't and actually feels pretty chilly.  Nothing flying except a couple the combat guys. The LPad is deserted.  Actually nobody has been up there all day but could have been.

The picture of the C-124 Globemaster reminded me of a Sargent Snook that flew one in the Sears parking lot in Orlando FLa. He was stationed at what was then Orlando AFB and was an AF fireman.  Big beautiful plane. Wish I had stayed in touch with him, great stunt flyer also.

Post by: Dave_Trible on July 16, 2017, 11:59:42 AM
Gordon I have sort of a soft spot for the C-124.  I grew up living next to Richards-Gebaur AFB in south KC which was a main base for the MAC.  Every afternoon you'd see the C-119 flying box cars and later the Globemasters come in.  The base is long closed but up to about 10 years ago it maintained a squadron of A10 Warhogs.  These days it's an international trade zone and those mile long runways are full bumper to bumper of new cars.

My father used to work on the big round engine transport planes at Dover AFB. As a kid I loved to go inside them when they would do open house days at the base. 124's  119's, and a couple others that MAC had in inventory. Did not mean to cause the thread to drift from Nats coverage. It just sparks strong and pleasant memories.

The storms haven't materialized as yet and maybe half went back out.  It seemed very hot and at times still and suffocating then at least once got hit with a dust devil that would have flipped the plane had it not been tied down with the stooge.  Don't know if that nailed them on the pad.  For the airplanes sitting loose in the pit it could have been exciting.  Tomorrow we'll practice then comes the pilots meeting and concours judging.  I won't be doing much with pictures for that so I hope others will and will add them here for all to see.  I'm not really well equipped for big photo files and transfer.

If there is a word about today and this week generally it's HOT.  The humidity is high and at times next to no wind.  Many are keeping practice sessions short and a very many are preferring to head to the grass instead of the LPad because of the extra reflective heat from the asphalt.  Never seen the grass so heavily used.

Dave is a busy guy.  When asked, I believe he said he has used or is on his third gallon of fuel.  I just keep using the same jugs over and over.  Way hot and humid today.  L pad was stifling, the grass circles were quite nice.  The circle next to us had Dave F. PW, Chris Rud, Bob McDonald and Chris Cox.

For those that haven't been here, it should be on your bucket list.  Much fun.

Good morning all!  Flying is about to start on day 1 of qualification rounds.  It's warm and fair still but the forecast calls for 5-7 Mph winds before long.  Circle 3 has a new twist this year- corn.  Instead of beans plants off the circle it's 6-7 foot corn.  This is a different visual here and could make interesting air at some point.  My own field is corn on one side and air coming over it forms turbulence sometimes.

Anyway here are the boards:  note ; it sorted out that group A is open only.  The other three groups have advanced on the circle,  who will fly before open.

Hi! We are testing it this year. For right now that is all we can do. We will have it next year.

Did you get the message I sent you (I got your phone call late)?  Looks like you're doing it manually.  You can go to a tabulator's computer at any time, select the appropriate sheet, hit the Update Scores button, then print that sheet, perhaps as a .pdf you can post.  Appropriate sheets are:

Wednesday and Thursday: Poster
Friday: Top 20 Poster
Saturday: Open Finals, then Walker Flyoff

One caution is that the Adobe .pdf maker has historically mispaginated Excel output.  I use Nitro, which works fine.

Thanks Dan!  Need to get YOU here sometime.  We are complete on 1. The other three circles are just finishing Advanced and the Open groups are about to begin their second rounds.  As luck would have it the winds are just now picking up to around 8-10 and feels like more is coming. The sky is a little darker to the northwest and we will get it here sooner or later.  Guessing by the size of the storm on radar we could go down for maybe 1-1 1/2 hours.  Then maybe very nice (and steamy) after that.

Yea, doesn't look all that good. Serious thunderstorms.

It's going to clear up well before sundown, unfortunately, what happens right after clearing is typically lots of gusty wind. It might make those with mediocre first-round flights a little nervous.

   Brett

p.s. it's clear now, winds about 10 gusting to 15, and it's not likely to improve before sundown. Not a disaster but should make it very difficult to improve on the morning score - so if you *have to*, time to show us what you have....

Jason, Jim, all thank you.  Might be a good point while we wait (Denny just announced the pits are open for business but Brett was correct- it's very breezy now and few are in a hurry), to briefly bring up some of what's going on and may happen going forward.  Our sport is trying to use some different media technology to get our story out.  Last evening we had our Pampa executive council meeting and general membership meeting.  We are at a point where changes and new directions are needed in how we communicate.  Our great Stunt News is going to have to transform into other things for three main reasons;
1.  After years of great service Bob and Liz are wishing to find other things to do in life than devote so much of there time to our enjoyment.  Good for them! But we don't have a good plan 'B' for the magazine makeup.
2.  Production and mailing costs of 4-6 issues per year are exceeding the membership fees which is not sustainable, especially as membership number are softening making it harder to spread costs.
3.  We grew up loving our model mags but with modern media it's largely old news by the time you get it.

Our discussions are centering around taking most of it on line with our new website nearing completion (we've gotten previews this week). It has live capability, blog interaction and archival capability.  The mag may become a larger once a year 'annual' type affair.  Another goal through this is to cut membership fees in half which should help many of our fixed-income potential members.  A bigger online footprint should be helpful on youthful recruits.

Anyway you may see our broadcasts go to the Pampa site with blogs and live feeds and may become therefore subscription based... JOIN PAMPA.

We are about to restart now.

I will admit that these were not exactly bold choices. We could have picked Paul, David, Orestes a year ago, and Derek is probably pretty predictable (although it's Top 20 day, during which many crazy things tend to happen). The remaining slot, just based on past experience, would have been between Chris R. Joe, Kaz, and Masuru. I am not much of one for scoreboard-watching when I am actually competing, but I can do the analysis, and Hiki-san was doing better relative to the other standard-bearers during qualifying. And I have other sources of information to go by. We'll see pretty soon, this contest is running on Pacific time after the delay.

There is a new twist I was just made aware of for tomorrow.  Heavy rain until 2:00 PM.  Quite a few including myself will head for home in the morning if that plays out since we had no plans to stay another night.  Looks like they might have trouble wanting to do the judges warm up.  In any event we wish everyone well, good luck and a safe trip home and I'm sure someone will give the final results.

David F. showed amazing consistency. Having seen Hiki fly (at VSC), it's no surprise that he finished well (6th). I must assume that he has stopped flying his bottoms at 2.5'?

All that aside, PW often seems to fly just badly enough in the early rounds to give others false hope...before he squashes them like bugs. I've seen that many times at local contests. Thanks for your reporting, Mr. Trible!   H^^ Steve

The reports on Muncie weather make a good case for moving the Nats to CA.

If so, then we Left Coasters will be able to compete.  Until then, good luck in IN.

Uhhhh.....
Looks to me like a couple of the left coasters competed just fine...my bet's on one of them to win.  Most likely Mr. Walker is not through making monkey's out of everybody yet!  He is obviously The MAN of all time in STUNT!

    Hey Joe;
There was a post on the Penton Owner's Group (a motorcycle group) about this photo hosting issue the other day. Lots of guys used PhotoBucket (I think) to host the photos that they posted on the forum there, and now they (Photbucket) are no longer offering free services and you must pay to use the site. There is one whole hell of a lot of really useful photos that are going to be lost. From the image I see in this thread, it looks the same as what is showing up on the POG list, so that may be your problem and not the SH site.
  Type at you later,
   Dan McEntee
