Yesterday our control line community lost another member. Johnny Brown of Meadville, Pa. passed away from heart failure in an Erie hospital. Most of you who read this will not know who John was but to a lot of us out here in the Erie area he was a great supporter of our sport in participation, assistance and even financial support of events. John was an active competition flyer in the 50s and 60s and slowed down in the 70s to more sport flying and sharing his love of it with others. He served as a judge in the Willow Grove days and taught many people about building and flying, myself being one of them.
John was not a person to sit back in the rocker and let life pass him by. He has been suffering very poor health for the last few years and had been in and out of hospitals a lot but he was still very active with family functions, church activities (he was a Baptist minister and a past editor for the National Bapist Comvention), was out to assist and support our club functions and also being an accoumplished musician he made the rounds weekly right up to this month to visit patients in local hospitals and entertain them with his guitar and wit. He was also active in working with Hospice the same way.
Finally, He did like going to Brodaks whenever he was up to the trip. Health issues kept him out of the circle for the last few years but he liked to show up to support our club and talk to people. I know he especially enjoyed 2010 when his grandson, Mason Brown, did very well in his first year of flying. John's passing has been a great loss for me personally. He gave me my first plane and engine and taught me to fly, he taught me to play the guitar and has been a mentor for me for over 60 years. He was also my uncle and I will miss him.............
