2012 GSSC Results
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:42:35 PM »
Well the 2012 Golden State Stunt Championships are in the history book! As a first time CD may I add . . .  “Thank You!”. I can now say with no reservation that there is more to it than you think, and the experience has given me a new found respect for all the hard work done by the CD's in the contests I've been to!!!

The flying site at the Madera Municipal Airport was well received! Many of the flyers told me that it was one of the best, if not the best site they had ever flown at. I've already called the Airport Manager and expressed my thanks to him and the city for their cooperation, and to extend the thanks of all the flyers for such a good site. I told him we want to come back next year, and he sees no problems with that. The only caveat would be any future construction that may “ruin” the site we used. But with the current economy, there are no current “shovel ready jobs” in our way. Barring any issues, I think that this is what we will face every year.

The Hampton Inn, our host hotel, was also very helpful. They rearranged their lobby to allow our banquet to be on site. And for our raffle they donated four certificates for a free one night stay in a suite at any Hampton Inn! There are now four lucky dogs that will spend one free night at the 2013 GSSC in a suite. (Unless they choose to use the certificate somewhere else in the mean time, but why would they want to do that?)

As you would expect in any competition that includes two former World Champions and many former National Champions, the scores were high . . . and close! I'll probably never make it back to the Nats, but I'm sure what we saw in Madera this weekend, was very very close to the same thing!) And NEVER in my wildest dreams did I every think I would be handing Dave Fitzgerald a Third Place award! But that's what I did. Dave scored a “respectable” 582.5, but was bested by Howard Rush who scored a whooping 583! But that was no good either, Paul Walker pounced on the hapless duo with a score of 591.5! I've seen them all fly before, but this weekend they all seemed more intense; all I can say is “Wow”, they are great! By the way, did I say close scores?? Well Brett Buck missed the podium all together with a “measly” score of 581.5. It was a great weekend of flying for sure . . . or was it a weekend of great flying? Both!

Expert:
1. Paul Walker 591.5;
2. Howard Rush; 583; Impact/Plettenberg 20-16
3. David Fitzgerald; 582.5; Thunder Gazer II / PA .75

2. David Riggs; 406.5; Nobler / AT .36
3. Norm Gayer; 384.5; Fancy Pants / OS .35S

Beginner:

2. Chuck Milsap; 59

2. Bob Whitely; 548.5; Formula S / Double Star .60
3. Lou Wolgast; 546.5; Fury / Double Star .60
Judges; Brett Buck & Richard Walbridge

Old Time:
1. Bob Whitely; 304; Humoungous / Double Star .60
2. Lou Wolgast; 296.5; Madman 56 / Double Star .54
3. Jim Aron; 294.25; Circle King YZ / OS LA .46
Judges; Doug Barton & Dave Fitzgerald

Concours Award:
Igor Panchenko; Extra 300S powered by an R&B 75 SS.

I cannot thank everyone enough for taking the time to attend the 2012 GSSC! With gas at $4.50+ per gallon, I know everyone had to think twice about making the trip.

Don't forget; GSSC 2013 is only 362 days away!!! October 19-20, 2013! See Ya!

Brian smiled and looked relaxed the whole time.  He and the PC Fliers did a dandy job.  They had all the details covered.  Brian had time to hang out with folks and even fly some stunt.  Yes, there were hot dogs.

Sorry Steve, I did not play cook this year, to busy "hanging out and flying stunt". However, fellow PC Flyer Chuck Milsap cooked 250 dogs over the three days.

I sure hope you can make it next year; I'll even don the apron myself to cook you up a special dog.

Brian, I am glad it went well for you.  It's really great when you have people behind you to help.   Also a great city and airport.   If I win the big one I will be there next year.

Brian,
Great report, any chance you can post the plane/motor-engine setups for the entries?

Hoping to see Howard tomorrow (I will be delivering his 2012 October surprise) with the intention of also delivering the odd point or two which are currently serving no known purpose in the bottom of my flight box.

Looks like you need to find 9 points in there to help Howard, Daniel. I'm just hoping to get a 130 point landing sometime during the next season.  ;) ;) ;) Steve

Thank you so much Brian for the First Class treatment throughout the weekend.  Mike was great as well, as was Bob Swan!  Alan and I made it back to the Frozen North in record time, all the while planning how to better represent our Country next year!

Brian,
Sorry I missed the contest.  I was very business with other projects.  I've heard great things about the venue and I hope it will continues at the new facility.  It seems like the city of Merced was very hospitable to our event.  I appreciate all the work and your club put into the event.

I hope to come down next year.

Steve,

I am not overly interested in helping Howard a lot. But I will kick in with what I can just to keep his interest level up to some minimum standard.

Alas, while casting about for spare points to give Howard I only came up with I.O.U.s floating around in my pit box. I'm thinking a few judges regretted scores given, couldn't make erasures, choosing instead to cash in later, thus the negative bits of paper. That some of these are written with crayon on coloured paper are regarded as clues...

Delivery of Sekrit Oktober Surprize to Howard also not happening. At least not this week.

Dan

Team Az had a wonderful time and complements Brian Massey, Mike Massey and Bob Swan for a job well done.
A little face time w/  Team Canada was worth the trip by itself.

Everybody represented themselves well. - Flying, building, and comraderically (is that a word?)
The skill level bar is awfully high.
I need to work hard just to be bad at this stuff

See you next year.

Cheers,

Likewise, the Washington crew had a great time and showed themselves well.
I was pleased to see Howard's placing considering where he was "on the way" to the Nat's.

I guess some are obliged to show up next year, to finish off the year!

Thanks Massey brothers for putting this shindig on!

See you next year.

The other half of the Canadian crew also wants to thank Brian, Mike and Bob for a wonderful time.  The facilities were top notch and the contest organization left little to be desired.  Worth every penny of the thousand plus mile trip.  Already looking forward to next year.  Can't forget getting to see all the Arizona crew, especially my old pal Jim Hoffman.  Seeing RJ, Warren and finally meeting John and seeing his Mustang made the trip even better.  By the way, $4.50 a gallon gas is a bargain when you live in the Great White North.

It was a great event and well done.  I would love to take credit for the planning and execution but must admit that my brother Brian was the instrument.  He had a lot of advance planning help from Bob Swan and other members of the PC Flyer's club.

I, however, live some 600 miles north of "bro" so active helping with planning and footwork was not possible.  But he made up for that shortcoming by working me mercilessly the first few days I arrived at his place just prior to the contest, and of course a little wrap up the day after.  The credit for the success of the contest is his, and he deserves it.  With, of course, a huge thanks to his "right hand" Bob Swan and all of the participating fliers who came from hundreds of miles (and further) around to make this a very large successful contest.
