Canopy Location on the Thundervolt
« on: October 20, 2012, 10:25:13 PM »
Getting ready to add the canopy to my Thundervolt and I thought I'd have a poll on its location.  Last years Thundervolt (full fuselage version) I had to move the canopy aft some for the battery hatch.  This years version is a profile that won't be an issue here.  What do you think?

Thanks.

I like the forward position. Sorta classic jet like stunter. Wouldn't take much carving and sanding to look like an F-86.

When sketching plans and scratchbuilding I always spend a lot of time just sitting and looking over aesthetics before commiting to anything. Looking at the photo above, my first "impulse" thought was the forward position. I do like that look, classic and sort of F-86ish like Dan says. But, that's looking at only the fuselage.

To make a decision for this model I had to go back to the build post and refresh myself with the wing and stab outlines. Looking at that, I think the aft position would look best on this design. The aft position will balance the overall look of this airplane. I'm saying that because of the forward sweep in the trailing edges of the wing and elevator. If the T/E's were straight or swept to the rear, then I'd probably say the forward canopy position. D>K

I'll put in my "2 cents worth" for the forward canopy position also.  This bird is taking on more of the F-86 look everyday.  A nice silver finish and some impressive decals......who knows.   Great job Crist.

   Keep it coming.

I agree that the forward postion looks more modern jet of the Saber Jet.   But, also the layout of the total plane with the aft canopy location reminds me of the F-80 Shooting Star.

Definitely forward...maybe it's simply because it stirs thoughts of the F-86 which I still think is the most beautiful of all Jet Fighters.

I vote that you dry assemble it and take a good hard look at it with the canopy in each position, then decide.

Just looking at the fuse, though, the forward canopy does look more muscular.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Crist, I agree with Tim. Dry assemble, then take a look at both positions. Installing the wing and tail will make things look a lot different than just looking at the fuselage profile view. Great build.

I dry assembled the Thundervolt and here is it with a aft and fwd canopy.
I just added a picture of a canopy that is located between the two.  I like it!

Even more positive towards the forward position. (number 2)
By the way that's a great looking profile.  I like it and I'm not much of a fan of profiles.

It's a mock jet Steve.  Jets just don't come with open cockpits (well, unless you're NASA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-14).

That's as bad as asking for a jet biplane (which the Soviets did, and got one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PZL_M-15_Belphegor)

I agree Crist, seeing it this way picture number three gets my vote!

Tim made an excellent point for when one is trying to decide these things, dry assemble and stare at things for awhile. y1
