After way too long i finally made it back to Portland and got to Delta Park and "hang with the Fireballs!" All the usual suspects were there. Richard, Leo, Scott R, Don C; et al. It was great to see everyone and enjoy a summer day n Portland. Leo was looking godd and flying pretty solid, Richard was grooving his Cardinal, things were ..... Sublime!
Richard E. had the much bashed Banshee on the line-up, and a full set of flight equipment that i left with a couple years ago. I pulled out a E-Z Just and a set of lines and got ready to go. A test run showed the OS .35 was surging. opened the needle and let it flush the old stuff out. still kinda rough, but good enough to see if it would clear out and go.
1st flight was to loosen verything up and knock the rust off me- and it was interesting to say the least..... ended up with a flame out up high and inverted. i was told later there was a collective sphincter contraction / gasp of dread by the whole gallery sitting there watching. Got it flipped with the help of a quick final burst from the motor and landed.
2nd flight ran better but I was all over the place, causing a few more cringes and flinches. The wide EZ just and my inbility to emember which way was downwind didn't help. made it down in 1 piece.
Final try' got a narrow handle from Richard, and put a heavy hub on the front. Leo had noticed the tank leaking, but it was running so let go. response was way better, things started feeling good, couple insides and squares, planes fine- pilot still lousy. Go inverted and blah, pooohhh ^&%&76- dead stick; get it down and call it a day. a tank repair and it will be go to go.
