1969 nats
« on: January 29, 2007, 05:51:45 AM »
I was at my parents this weekend .They are trying to get rid of some things so they can move.Came upon a box that said "NAVY PICTURES".started browsing and came upon 100+ slides of the '69 NATS and my Dad's planes when he was in Okinawa(late50's,early 60's).the first batch should be done today. There are some great looking planes(even large biplanes).Hope to be able to show everyone when they're finshed.I have no info on any of the planes or owners,so everyone will have to put on they're thinking caps.

I have the first batch on disc(42 various pictures).Among those there is a Novi 4, an USA-1, GAlaxy, Playboy, Apache and a couple Noblers. There are several racers(R/C,I think)and one BIG scale biplane.Paul Smith e mailed me and said he could probably identify planes and owners as he was a participant.Hope to post some pictures in the next couple of days.

PS : Almost forgot about Mike Thompson's Mystere

Welllll,

I'm pretty sure you have Al Rabe and his Beacat and Dave Gierke's Novi.

That leaves three planes up for grabs,,,

First picture, upper left is Jim Kostecky's "Spirit of America". I got to fly that airplane later that year at the St Louis Team trials. I really liked it. I wish I had plans, but apparently they don't exist.

We all miss Jim.

The white ship with the black and blue stripes is an easy one: That's Bill Werwage's original USA-1 in its first paint scheme. Later that year Bill stripped the finish on that model and redesigned some of the fuselage and rudder shapes to make the model look almost identical to Jerry Worth's Apterix. That became the USA-1 that we all recognize today. The mods were complete and the model was flown prior to the end of 1969 making both versions of the model legal for Classic competition.

And that beautiful Mint colored stunter belonged to the late Don Bambrick.
