This has gotten a little off topic. I was able to participate in the Air Force World Wide Model Airplane Championships in 64 (where I first met Dick Mathis - the CD), in 66 (where I first met George Aldrich - the CD) and in 68. Made the Air Force teams to the 66 and 70 Nats. (Grad school sort of interfered with any plans for the 68 and 69 Air Force meets.)
That was in the era when the AMA Nats recognized individual Jr, Sr, and Open individual champions, national team champions and club team champions. To qualify for those different championship categories, each individual had to fly up to 9 events like 3 CL events, 3 FF events, and 3 more of either category. The National and Club Teams consisted of 5 competitors each. The Air Force teams were the National Team Champions for a number of years until just before the Navy stopped sponsorship of the Nats. One of the reasons for the Air Force success was that in addition to the 5 man teams and their combined 45 events being flown was that the Air Force also sent another 5 people as "mechanics" to do the chasing, standing in lines and repairing airplanes.
As a young guy in the Air Force, that was a pretty good deal. Was on permissive TDY for the week of the Air Force meets, then when I made the Air Force team to the Nats, ended up with 3 weeks of permissive TDY with a small expense allowance to fly model airplanes. Quite an experience.
